Church Pool League

I am looking for an easy way to handicap an 8 Ball League?
The players will at best make 2 balls in row.
Time is important; I have never really played in a pool league before and I am not sure how many there should be to a team?
I thought it would be fun to start one with the members at church it is an easy way to really get to know each other.
We would be traveling to the homes of members that have tables. I am assuming 2 teams per table (home).
Any input you have would be helpful, or if you could steer me in the right direction.
Thank you,

I'm not even sure how long it would take or how many we should have to a team.

Robin, it would depend on how many players per team to get the best format. Buts lets suppose its 3 or 5 players per team. To make it a good social event I suggest a Round Robin format.

The easiest and simplest way would be that each player plays 1 game with every player on the other team in an alternating system. This leaves plenty of time for chatting amongst the participants. The scoring is simple. Each game win is worth 10pts while the person who lost gets the # of balls made in their group for that game. Win = 10, loss = 0 to 7. It gets handicapped on an individual and team basis. Its the BCA way and it is very friendly to score keepers and players alike.

If you need more info look up the BCA score sheets and handicap system.

If you need any additional help finding info call me, I am sure I have it around the office somewhere. I can also help provide you with scheduling for the teams.

Good Luck,

Mj

Wow, great thank you Mike
I would like anything you have on scheduling I was thinking I had to have everyone on a 15 minute clock. A round Robin sounds good to but would that work on 1 table?

1 table would work great with 3-5 players per team playing 3 rounds with only 2 teams but would take too long with any more players or teams.

1 table with 5 beginner players playing only 3 rounds would take about 2 - 2.5 hours.

Scheduling the teams would depend upon how many teams there are and how many different places there are to play.

We are putting the form out Sunday for sign ups........I will keep you posted.
I was thinking 4 players to a team? So that would work if they played 3 rounds each?

Robin,
Another idea, slightly different, is to hold a weekly or how ever often "tournament". If you can get, say 8 people involved, here's what to do. Either take both Aces, Kings, Queens & Jacks from a deck of cards and spread them out on a table all shiffled around. Each person picks one card. The Kings play each other, queens play each other, etc.
Once the order of play is established, have the "bracket's drawn up on a big tablet and each match can be played whenever the two players get together. The 4 winners play another match against another winner, and the 4 losers play another match in the "losers" bracket. The final winner on the winners side is the hotseat, and whoever emerges from the other side would have to beat the hotseat twice to win for that week. Matches shouldn't take that long if they're races to 3 or 4. I would think that if everybody could commit to one afternoon - evening, it could possible be pulled off in one long session if you could get 4 players at 2 houses, then all come together for the "finals",
You, I assume, will be the "tournament director" and not a player I assume, as you could probably play one handed left handed on one foot with one eye shut and still beat the type of player you described in your initial post!:)
Incorporate some good food with your fellowship, the conversation will most likely include some discussion on bible passages or doctrine or whatever, and you have the recipee for a great time.

I wouldn't advise alcohol or gambling:D :D :D

I think one limiter is also how many people in your church actually have home tables, and of those how many would go for the idea? Maybe you already have somewhat of a feel for this. Something like a pool life group? We considered this at our church, but finding common ground to play. Might be better suited for a guys life group rather than mixed. I don't know many women (married) who would really enjoy this. This would also be great as a mixer for singles to get to know each other without the pressures and temptations of one on one dating. Being with another group of believers is a great start.

You need to wear this t-shirt to your new church pool league. :D

I do need to find out if there is an interest and who meaning just male or both. I am hoping both but who knows.
I did want it to have a handicap system so better players will still play evenly with the beginners. I of course always hated this kind of format.....but this is for fun not $$$$
And yes I will be playing so it is important to have a heavy handicap system in place.

Hi Robin, nice to see you posting. :) Maybe a blind draw dutch doubles initial tournament would be a good way to peak some interest. You could choose some of the people that can somewhat play and team them with a beginer. Good Luck and have Fun.

Cool idea...

Unfortunately most handicapping systems are gonna have a very difficult time with such a huge disparity of skill. The difficulty is in the question: How much weight are you going to have to give up, in order to make most of those other pool players (ball banger level) actually be a threat to have a chance to beat you.

And then of course, as is the case in any reasonable sized group, there will be someone who has at least a modicum of skill whereby if things line up right that 1 person or 2 could actually get a favorable condition to win.

Then of course you could just go hardcore:

9 Ball - Race to 7 - alternate break - tournament
Winner takes all!
And you should get the cash and all the baked goods you could handle!!!

:D

I know, I'm not sure I'll be able to play.
