Cincinnati Area players (Ralph Black is alive an well)

Ralf has got to be in his 80s by now. He use to play in all the big tournaments in the Cincy area. He had a reputation of being one of the best $5/game 9 ball players in the city for a long time.

He and Jerri Ticomb use to partner up hustling in the area.

Wow. I haven't heard that name since I was a teenager.

Ralph used to play in the pool room I discovered pool in. K&L Family Billiards on Hamilton Ave. That was about twenty four years ago. He always played with a house cue he carried around with him that had a black butt cap on it. I still remember that cue. Ralph was always playing in the weekly tournaments and did well.

He was always nice to a young kid who didnt know shit about pool. Glad to hear he is still kicking around.

I remember Ralph from the early days of Michaels Billiards in Fairfield. He was up there back then and a very nice man as well. Have not heard his name in years.

Ralph Black

Ralph was a regular at the weekly nine ball tourney at Western Bowl. He was always consistent but couldn't handle other top players who were also regular players at that event. One in particular was Joey Spaeth.

Larry

PS... I think Ralph would be mid to late 70's today. A very nice quiet sort of guy, who I remember we'll.

I'm trying to post, but not having much luck. I keep getting this message, but I'm not posting links.

Just an FYI, if anybody cares. I'm Ralph's oldest son Landon and thought I'd post his where 'bouts as I've seen him mentioned in a few old threads here. I've probably met some of you at one time or another as I used to go watch Dad play some here and there. Dad's doing fine right now and he did give up the game back in '07 after 5 bypass open heart surgery. They said he had just enough of a heart attack to save his life when they found the 5 blockages as the next one would've/could've been the BIG ONE. The stress of playing took it's toll some I think. He's doing just fine and still works out 3 days a week at a local Sr. Center. He wouldn't admit it, but I know he misses the game and the folks he's befriended over his MANY years involved with the game. It's been a HUGE part of his and our lives.

I just wanted to let his friend & folks know he's still alive kickin' @ 76!

Good to hear. I've seen Ralph play a few times. Always a gentleman. Taking any action these days? I've got a horse.

Man, I'm sorry to here this. I always liked Jerri. I used to run into her and her entourage at a few different taverns and match up some. Back then I had a little bit of the best of it playing on bar boxes and as such am money ahead. She never won the woman's world championship but I think she came in 2nd like 3 times. Herself and Joey Spaeth gave an exhibition straight pool match at a tournament in the early eighties on a nine ft. Goldcrown and this is where her talent showed. I would have not had any chance what's so ever on the bigger table.

Ralph pulled up playing probably 10 years ago but for a while he still showed up at tournaments and play-offs just to watch. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone. He's a religious man but unlike some other's, he wasn't a hypocrite. I've known Ralph for probably 35 or 40 years.

I'm Ralph's oldest son Landon and have probably met some of you as I used to go and watch him and others play some back in the day. I just wanted to let folks, that care, know that Dad is alive and kickin' @ 76. He gave up the game (for the 2nd and last time) in '07 after open heart surgery. He had a mild heart attack that actually saved his life. They found 5 blockages and so 5 by passes later he was good. He still gets out and goes to a local Sr. center to "work out" 3-4 days a week and goes to church twice a week with my Mom. Stress free. I really think the stress of playing had a bit to do with his heart. He wouldn't admit it, but I know he misses he game and the people he's befriended over the years. It's been a big part of his life and I'm proud that he's my father. The reason for my post is I had read some older posts where he was mentioned and just thought I'd catch up.

I love hearing the stories and the names of folks I've had the pleasure of meeting over the years. I feel Dad was as good as it gets on any given day, but it wasn't life or death to him. I appreciate the kind words.

PS- it's been a pain to post this as it seems the only time a post would go through is when I questioned what was going on.

I've posted 2 updated posts that said they had to go through a moderator, but have never showed up. I post this and it posts automatically. Why?

I also feel that on any given day he was as good as most.
