Back in the 80s there was a lot of pool action across the United States, road players of various skill levels trying to gamble...tournaments were serious mostly when the road players meet up, match up and try to win all the Cheese!

One player with the heart of a lion and know for saying "I've never been beat, just ran out of money a few times," - Scotty Townsend.

Scotty and I had battles on the table, partied together off the table and teamed up at the World Series of Pool in Las Vegas.....I'll always remember Scotty, he was an amazing character, there will never be another cut from his mold. After watching my story about Scotty please feel free to tell one of your own if you knew Scotty, there's definitely many good ones!

I could be mistaken about you CJ, but I surely think that I've seen both you and Scotty in Birmingham Alabama, not together though. And it seems I've seen Scotty more than a couple times.
This would've been mid '70's up until mid - late 80's.
Hope to run into you some day though, maybe for a class or so.

Scotty would turn up anywhere. In the city, in a bar on the backside of nowhere. A bar on 22 not too far from Kilgore LA or similar name. East of Tin Lizzie's a ways. The end of the world in Bruly or End of the World down on the bayou, literally where the road ended. He always seemed happy living life, big scores or small. I played him a couple times on challenge tables for cheap, didn't know his name for years afterwards. If I had heard it, I forgot.

I've been around Birmingham a few times through the years, wasn't Jimmy King there?

We played in Anniston and Gadston Alabama, I played Matlock a $10,000 set on the bar table at a big tournament there.

Scotty was a real road player, he was on the move a lot, didn't back down from many players on the bar table. We had several battles, I spotted him, but didn't have to win at any given time even....he could get in a gear and put 6 packs together effortlessly.

I probably won't be giving many private lessons, but all my instructional videos are at www.masteringpocketbilliards.com - there are several videos that are not available anywhere else.

Great sories cj,keep em comin..i never heard back when i asked if you ever ran into a 100 pound,soakin wet,hispanic/cuban player from florida that played real good...luis vierra? He gave me and my road player partner more than we could handle back in the nineties...nobody ever mentions him.

Yes, Jimmy is from here, known him most of my life but no one's heard from him in quite a while.
He would surely gamble around here. His name was more well known among bar players than Squirrel. Just out of curiosity, how did you match up with him?
Last I played him was 7 or 8 years ago and he spotted me last 2 on 9-ball. I lucked up and won the set.

Jimmy wanted the wild 6 from me on the bar table, I probably would have given it to him but he wasn't pumped up at the time so it wasn't worth it.

There was a rumor he had passed last time I heard his name. He wasn't exactly a moral human being lol He told me some stuff he's done that wasn't exactly respectable to say the least. I try not to judge people, although at times it's wise to know who to stay away from - life is somewhat of a sorting process!

You're dead on about the morals. I said I've known him most my life but I stopped there. A helluva lot of folks around are glad that we hadn't heard from him. That's another reason he was better known than Squirrel. LOL
I retired 6 years ago from Lone Star Transportation based in Ft. Worth hauling the long wind blades. I surely wished I had gotten to your place. Maybe some day I'll run across you and introduce myself, maybe play a set. Take care and be safe!
 
I'm heading to New Orleans and Baton Rouge if you're in that area.

I have a place south of Ft. Worth, {these days the country life is my preference} hanging out in Iowa and Nebraska lately.

Sure, hope to run into you one of these days, it's impossible to know where I'll these days, I got a call to go to Southern Louisiana yesterday to give lessons from 2 people ....I usually look for signs in 3's, so one more and I'm heading to New Orleans and Baton Rouge if you're in that area.

I've heard the name Louis Vierra, I lived in Tampa in 86 probably know him from that time.....seems like he lived in Orlando.

Florida had a LOT of action in the mid to late 80s, we took off some big scores. I was there at first with Strong Arm John in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami - I have a road Story about that trip on my You Tube Channel.

Glad you like the stories, I made a good one today about my experience in Detroit, I'll post it soon.

Normally the grapevine would be guaranteed to find you a few more lessons but the halls closed has the grapevine out of whack too I reckon. I'm about equal distances north of New Orleans and east of Baton Rouge but not in the loop of goings on these days.

I didn't know you lived in that area, in the last 7 months I've been to Baton Rouge, and New Orleans a lot.

There's a lot of quality people there, I've made some really good friends, even a man with Home Land Security had me come to his farm and teach him and a couple other players.

He had all kinds of animals, snakes, alligators and even a 2000+ pound bull that would escape from anywhere he said. lol - that's a lot of bull!! :thumbup:
