This is a link to an old NY Times article(1992) that I haven't noticed posted here previously. It was posted on my local APA website's pool forum by another member. It is a very interesting read and it's a nice trip back in time.

The article focuses on women in pool, lots of interesting quotes from female pro's of the time like this one on page 4:

"Pool saved me from becoming a hooker," :eek:

Nice artcle...what kind of caught me by surprise was the following

Unlike male players -- who go by such evocative names as Buddy (The Rifleman) Hall, Lou (Machine Gun) Butera or Mike (Captain Hook) Sigel -- Mataya is known simply as Ewa (pronounced AY-vah). "They sound like gangsters or big-time pro wrestlers," she says of the men, wrinkling her nose. "It's such a guy thing -- it's really not feminine," she says, adding, "Besides, Chris Evert never really had a nickname. She was just Chrissie."

I could swear I have heard a nick name used on national TV for Ewa as "The Striking Viking" and Janette Lee as "The Black Widow"

I think those nicknames came after this article was written. It described Jeeanette Lee as a 20 year old playing in her first WPBA event. I don't know when she adopted the moniker of "The Black Widow".

I'm pretty sure it came before she went pro, when she was just a local shooter.
 
Yes, the article was written in 1992. Quite a while back, Ewa was only 27 at the time IIRC? Thanks for the article, George. Rep for you!

After rereading the quote I see that it was Ewa's comment that was quoted in regards to nicknames. Any idea when Ewa started being called "The Striking Viking"?

That was a most interesting read!

What ever happen to "Don Mackey", did he get run off, quit or what?......guess I just kinda lost touch there for awhile.

When the PBTA folded, after RJR/Camel pulled out of men's professional pool (circa mid-90's), Mackey sued RJR, and won something like $600k. Guess how much the players got paid from that sum? ZERO! Last time I heard, Mackey was living on a golf course, somewhere in FL. Such a nice man...and he did SO much for professional pool! :rolleyes:

BTW, Ewa is MUCH better looking now, than she was back then, imo!

After she married Mitch. I think she got ticked at his idiotic broadcasting and popped him in the mouth to shut him up.:D

Ewa has had her nickname for a long time. I was there at the Tropicana in the late 70's. (78 or79) When she was married to "Pretty boy" Jimmy Mataya
at the Tropicanna at the U.S. 8 & 9 Ball championships. She was Striking and very beautiful then.

I have had many names... some, I can't put on this fine forum but just a few were "Instant Action" "Angel" {of Evil and Angel} Hal Mix called me "Salem Slim" in the 90's before he passed away.

I have a road player and his wife staying with me now. He's just J.C.

Do you remember La Diabla in the early 80's Southern Cal??? We have names too. But my favorite will always be Little Debbie.

Oooo I just remembered Seattle Sue. Around the time of Seattle Slew. & Kathy Meoww, was that really her name? She used to travel with Howard Akita.
