Cleaning irish linen

Was wondering if anyone has a idea on how to get the smell of smoke out of my wrap. My wife and I don't smoke, so we notice it more I'm sure.

Can't really use anything with a liquid in it, at least I don't think so. Like the wrap nice and smooth, and if it gets damp its going to be much more tacky and rough.

"Back in the day", before everyone had lathes, I used to use a damp cloth to clean my wrap, then once it was dry, I would use wax paper to "burnish" it. It makes the wrap feel like it was just pressed.

May give that a try if the alcohol doesn't work out. I've always just used a small piece of worn out 2000 grit wet dry paper to smooth it out, but my current wrap feels perfect.

If it raises the linen, just iron it with a hot iron.
I know one pretigous cuemaker who just hot irons his wraps. Doesn't even press them.

Gave it a try, doesn't seem bad. Hopefully when I'm out playing later it won't be too tacky.

~wandering around looking for the iron I know we got for a wedding gift....damn we gotta move and get unpacked~

my schon had some bad scratches in the wrap and someone suggested i spray it with spray on starch. Worked welll, darkended the wrap some and got rid of the scratches, but im thinkin it might help get rid of the smell for you since it has baking soda in it

Rag dampened lightly with denatured alcohol.

Yep that works well, done it for years. The key is dampen lightly. Another is wipe in the direction it is wrapped rather than up and down. Yet another is use a more slick type of cloth, rather than a terry type of towel. Mine stays so slick it about flys out of my hand.

If it's just the smell you want to eliminate, and not dirt, you could use an air purifier like the one I have. I use mine every night to take the smell out of my leather "bar coat." I simply hang up my coat on a chair next to the purifier and, voila!, the smell is gone by morning. :) It cost a bit up front, but it purifies our whole house, not just coats or pool cues.

Air filters don't work for this; it has to be a purifier that is designed to gobble up the little smelly things.

What do you have exactly?

I have a cue with no wrap. The cue reeks with smoke after being in a smokey place. Even after wiping it off with a damp cloth the odor is still there. The cue case also picks up the smoke. Even after taking a shower I can still smell it on my skin. I love playing pool but can't stand the smoke hazzard that goes along with it.

You people have great noses. Spray some house cleaner on it or old spice. I have been cleaning my wraps with just a wet towel and soft soap for years and never had one come apart. If it does, it was already loose and ready to break. I want the wrap raised and a little tacky after that, it helps me feel the grip better. I don't want my grip slick. If I want that, you may as well buy a meucci with a clear coat of the wrap which i think self defeats the purpose of the wrap.

I like a wrap, just don't like a real tacky one. And when you don't smoke, the smell of smoke is a easy one to pick up.

"Febreeze"--buy at any grocery or drug store. Spray LIGHTLY onto lint free cloth and wipe along the grain of the wrap (spinning it in your hand). Works perfect, and if you use too much and the wrap does get "fuzzy", it'll smooth out after a couple hours of play (from the sweat of your hands). Ahhhh, mountain breeze.......................
