Cloth decision - 860? How much humidity is too high and may loosen up the cloth?

Just found this forum yesterday. Great stuff. I did some searching but couldn't find a specific answer to my question.

I will be playing 8ball or 9 ball on my Brunswick 8ft Montebello and am thinking about getting it re-clothed when it is reassebled as I have moved about a year ago.

I recently finished my gameroom which was built around this table. :) I am anxious to get my table setup. I am debating to try and reuse the cloth I have which is Mali. It is ok. I am not a pro- only play at home but enjoy playing the game and want to get better. I have played recreationally for 15 years or so. My basement is finshed and below grade. Currently it is 70% humidity(today) and the first level of the house is 55%. Just rained yestereday. I have HVAC vents and a cold air return and yesterday bought a de-humidifier for an 800 sq ft area(2 rooms). Haven't used the dehumidifier yet. I live in Pittsburgh PA.

I was thinking about the Simonis 860 but am concerned about humidity at it is 90% wool and have learned it isn't alway humidity friendly. I don't want to have to always have the dehumidifier running for fear that the cloth may losen up. I may go on vacation for a week or so. I want to have it - enjoy it and not have to worry.

My questions -
1. is the 860 ok? Or is a 70/30 blend better?
2. What relative humidity level is too high that may affect the cloth?
3. I was thinking the 860HR but need a dark green or spruce color. What quality cloth would someone suggest if not 860 - doesn't have to be Simonis? Championship?

I would appreciate the input. I apolagize if i missed a previous thread. I figured the table mechanics may have the best viewpoint as they may have had to restretch and have seen the environment.

If you can keep the RH between 45% and 65% you should have no problem with 860 if properly stretched/installed.
Would not recommend 760 for an 8' table unless all you play is 8-ball. Too fast for 9-ball.

At 70% RH you're on the border of normal/humid RH. The dehumidifier would not have to work hard to get into the 60-65% range.

You're looking for the 860HR Green...that is 70%wool/30%nylon....the HR is for High Resistance to showing ball wear....while being humidity resistant at the same time.

Let me send you some windex for your specs.
He wants dark green or spruce. :D

But based on his post I don't see a humidity problem.

Thanks for the input gents. I initially wanted the HR but the HR colors look like crap in my room - next to the paint, pool light.... I also have the matching cue rack and the cloth will be in back of it. Spruce would be the color I need. I am no designer but I can see this coming.

DM - if I can keep it below 75% is that ok or is it 70%? So If I go on vacation for a week and all dehumidifiers are shut off - it will probably get messed up if humidity is > 75%?

Seems like I can either keep what I have and wait for them to produce the color I need in the HR , keep a constant watch on humidity and go with 860, or maybe go with the 3030 or something else.

any other thoughts on this situation and/or my OCDness? :)

thanks again

Being in Pittsburgh I wouldn't think you would have much of a humidity problem especially considering your basement
has hvac as do many people with a table downstairs. I doubt we will see HR in more colors anytime in the forseeable future.
I'd use 860 and if you go on vacation leave the hvac on around 72-74 to maintain temp/humidity in the house.
Ideally you want to keep RH below 70%.

I read that:D but the real answer is to have the cloth installed correctly and there won't be any loose cloth in the first place;)

I would keep the humidity below 70% but on vacation i Usually shut everything off in the house- hvac/water - everything(usually for 7 days).

According to RKC, if the cloth is installed correctly, humidity is high - then I shouldn't have permanent issues resulting in restretching? I guess there are no guarantees and I realize that optimally i would have my appliances running while i am away.

I am going to get this done by the most reputable company in the area to my knowledge - but obviously the job will be as good as the installer is that day. I believe this company will stand behind its install/product.

I have to ask - 3030 vs the 860HR -- is it that much of a step down?

BTW - that Cobra avatar freaks me out a bit. :) Pretty darn real.

Thanks again fellas

If installed and stretched right you really shouldn't have a problem.
70-75% RH is not excessively high. Regardless, I'd still leave the hvac on during vacation even if you set it higher like 76-78 on a/c.
BTW, anytime you use Simonis it's a step up IMO.

Appreciated Dartman.

I would have felt a little safer getting the HR ... but the damn color issue so I'll probably go with the 860 which seems almost as good in this application.

To be sure - I emailed Simonis and was told "spruce" for the HR isn't on the horizon. I finished my gameroom(and house selection) around my pool table with respect to dimensions - but didn't think of cloth table color. The Simonis rep was great.

Last question - if I were to try and reuse my existing cloth(Mali) that has obviously already been cut/stretched about 6 years ago - is it easy to get the same quality installation or is it alot tougher since there isn't much extra to hang onto. This may be a dumb question - but I just don't know. It is in good shape - i didn't play much for awhile since i was in night school.

If the avatar freaks you out I can't wait until you meet Glen!

You can reuse the Mali - it will take a little doing to grab enough to stretch it but it is doable.
If it was previously stapled it can be glued down to the slate edge this time.
But if you have this spiffy new game room why reuse 6 year old cloth since it may not
be long until it needs changing. With Simonis you get top shelf cloth and wont have any more fuzz balls (pilling).
