SITUATION: 1) League play
2) 4 person teams
3) one minute to 'coach'/teammate on the shot with out
pointing across table/aligning etc(all verbal)
4) 3 times in game maximum/player may ask for 'coach'

If you are the coach- do you ask the player what he wants to do as the starting point or do you come up with your own solution since you were invited in? Is it better for the 'asking 'player to have his own thots on what to do (then agree/disagree ?) Then assuming his plan isn't going to work(he agrees) do you come up with what you (the coach) would attempt ? or do you try to figure out what the player can do and ask him to try to do that?

Heck I can't do 1/2 the time what I think I can do/ let alone expect him to be able to do that same thing in this pressure situation(crap- did I answer my own question?) Of course these situations usually come up after player had ball in hand on the ball b4 the players winning 'spot' ball where no 'coach' was asked for - and now "we're" in trouble. I find it kind of a no win situation when often the missed opportunity to coach at a critical time ends up costing the team a loss because NOW the situation doesn't look good.

I always ask what their first thought is, to get an idea what they're comfortable doing. I then present better ways, if I see any. If I know they won't be comfortable doing it and their way is OK, I strongly suggest they stick with it.

This is taking into consideration their skill level. This is really only with D/C-rated players. Anyone higher wouldn't ask me to coach in the first place!

I agree completely. Asking for coaching help from me is inviting disaster- sometimes entertaining but usually a bust. In one room here locally I am known as 'the curse'- not without good reason.

And part of the problem is gauging the players skill level- and whether it can be brot to bear in the pressure situation. Decide/commit/ shoot/accept the result/move on/have another beer.

In all circumstances I always ask what their plan is. Sometimes they see it differently than I do and it may be a better option. I then tell them what my thinking is and ask if they are comfortable with it and if they feel that they can do what we want to accomplish. It makes no sense to have them do something beyond their skill. The easiest is always the best but what may be easy for me may be impossible for someone else.
