Cochran's

“Hawaiian Paul”…Worked at the Palace down the street. Paul played as good a Nine Ball as anybody in the world but only against weak players and for small money. ($3 to $10 a game) Paul also played very good golf.
...
I think that would be Paul Silva. I played him nine ball at the Palace once. The good news was that the stakes were low. The bad news was that he made nine ball look like straight pool -- on each shot it seemed like the only logical ball he could play position on was the next higher ball.

Also at the Palace, I was once introduced to "Joe" as a possible nine ball game. Joe allowed as to how nine ball was a young man's game, so he would be willing to try some one pocket. My fallback suggestion would have been some 14.1, but that would have been a mistake as Joe was Joe Procita who still holds the record for high run at straight pool in a tournament. We didn't play.

Bob, what was Procita's record high run?

Thanks~ Doc

It's threads like this that fully demonstrate to me that my billiards experience is just a drop in the bucket compared to these guys.

I have met and been friends with many small-time, unknown characters of the game, some shortstops, and a pro or two, but the quantity of bigdogs that Grady was around is quite intimidating.

My banger status has never been more substantiated! Haha!

Thanks for the great posts, Grady and Freddy! Really enjoy reading about the players of earlier times.

Hooked up with Dick twice in those days. First time was in the '68 Arizona 14-1 Championship. Didn't see him as much of a player in that match. Next time was '70 Stardust Open qualifier and state championship at Pritchard's. That was a memorable match. Played 9-ball for several hours the evening before final match of tournament. Had to pull up while ahead to rest for tournament final. He exploded and tossed his cue *over* 4 tables.

Read recently where he once busted Richie Florence in San Jose. Richie should be in the HOF...pool is a funny game.

Grady, do you recall "chinese Jimmy Wong"... He seemed a strong player at Cochran"s and the Palace.

I was about to ask about Jimmy Wong too....another question would be ....
Didn't Mosconi visit Cochrane's a few times? And was it true he was thrown out of there for some reason? Any stories about him, Grady?
