Collision Control And Avoidance

Whenever I have a shot like this one where you have to go around three rails to get from the 3B to the 4B I almost always will run into the 8B. No matter where the 8B (or whatever ball it may be) is I usually seem to find a way to make contact with it.

Any tips or ideas on how to avoid the 8B in this situation?

Draw with a little right to go through the 6-9 gap? I have zero idea how to apply english in that game.

EDIT: I figured out the english, but on my first and second shots I didn't apply english and didn't the 8B once?

Does anyone think it’s possible to go 2 rails, coming inside the 9-ball by hitting the 3-ball with a touch of draw to stun the CB farther down the long rail (at a shallower angle than a rolling CB) with a touch of inside to help stay above the 9?

A crude but solid method, that eliminates most of the guess work, is this:

Line up the three-rail path (of the cue ball) with your eyes and figure out where you need to hit the third rail. You'll have more than one option as to where to hit your first rail but find a spot where the diamond system (in this case the corner five system) validates that the three-rail path will hit the third rail where you want it.

Many players use the corner five system for kicks only, but it is also useful in judging multi-rail position paths.

I'll try this again.

There is no reason to go 3 rails here!!

Cut the 3 ball into the side pocket with the proper speed & gently run into the 6.

Not many problems left after that.

Didn't you just get new cloth on both tables?
It might not react like most people's tables.
Which table were you playing on?

Yes, also a good solution but, in my experience, top players will usually go three rails here.

You have a swath of directional options before the first cushion. Leave out the side spin until you find the most reliable 2nd rail exit. You can then apply a touch of running spin to throttle the speed.

Stu,

There's a few things at work here.

DCP is far from a top player. It is also his contention that you have to go three rail which is a misnomer. Thirdly there is really nothing that goes terribly wrong with running into the 8 unless leaving a longer shot on the 4 is a huge problem.

ChalkySticks is also shit imo at representing a table layout.

I understand the question, but I wouldn't worry about the 8 Ball in this layout because all the balls have a pocket and position is a lock. If the table is slow, a nine-o'clock cue ball, if the table is fast a little less speed or seven-o'clock, three rails around.

After hitting the shot a few times I have come to this conclusion.

The tangent line off the 3 ball in the side is not that dissimilar to a three rail kick to the line where the 4 sits.

So the shot should be very easy with running english to go around the back of both the 8 & 9 into the shot line of the 4.

Yes, well said.

And when the ChalkySticks website goes belly up, which it will certainly do eventually -- remember the Wei Table? -- there will be no way to see the subject shot.

Practice shots like that until you can hit within a ball of where you want on the third cushion. Depending on the exact positions of the cue and object ball, you will need various amounts of draw/follow/side. Practice carefully with a purpose.
