should have thrown in pool hall junkies :) another good one.
Color of Money for me...

Poolhall Junkies doesn't hold a candle to either of those...

The Hustler was sssssooooo much more realistic with the alcohol and ego situations. "The Color of Money?" Noone can turn it up and down and just beat anyone at any time. And... if I had been Paul Newman, Eddie, and Tom Cruise wouldn't lay down as told, I'd dropped him as a horse. That movie is so unrealistic. The bartender "Wanna go for a thousand?" The guy runs a poolroom and then does this? Come on. Oh yeah, where do you find all of these idiots betting $40 and $100 a game? They couldn't run three balls shelling out this kind of action? There are some good "one liners" in TCofM though. "I didn't deserve that." "Yes, yes you did." And we all use Keith's line "Just like a nightmare isn't it." Funny thing, back in the 80's, Keith could say that to most.

The Hustler is a great 4 out of 4 star flick, but I always find myself fast forwarding through the mushey stuff.

IMO the Color of Money was corny with Cruise's antics bordering on ridiculous and embarrassing to the game of pool. Paul Newman did all he could to salvage a movie from this script.

The cornyness (if that's a word) continued with the camera work, and pathetic milktoast views of mooshy bridge hands to boot.

(how do ya think I voted?) :)

The Color of Money did, however, send a lot of learning guppies into the poolrooms, me included.

X2...

Hustler, incredible movie....Gleason, Newman, and Scott were/are masters of their craft....love the black and white, great call.....really enjoyed the pool, but the hour in the middle/love story was a beating for me....

TCOM, great as well......Newman and Cruise gave excellent performances....for me, since it was more modern day, it's easier to relate to....and I used to love the game Stocker :D

IMHO, it's a tie ;)

when eddie forfeits his match in the movie ,was the guy in the red bandana someone famouslike a good player?? i mean whats up with the way he was dressed??

Pool Hall Junkies sucked. The last "hustle" in particular was completely ridiculous - as if anybody, much less a seasoned gambler (which Ricky Schroeder cannot play), would pay up on a word-play hustle. I've also met Mars Callahan - maybe that has something to do with my opinion of his movie.

Between the other two, The Hustler is a real movie and CoM is just Cruiseploitation (although I'd pay to be exploited by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio).

The Hustler by far is the better movie. It has much more depth than The Color of Money. I just purchased the 2 disc dvd of The Hustler and it is great will all of the special features.

It’s a crap shoot.

The hustler is a great story, but the color of money has great photography.

But, if I had my choice, it would be the Baltimore Bullet…… :D

"The Hustler" , of course. Any film that stars Tom science-boy Cruise is a mistake. I just tolerate him if the film is about pool. I don't get it. If you compare Cruise to any of the great actors of the past, Cruise would be lucky to get a bit part in their films.

I've heard the reason there was never a sequel to The Hustler was because Gleason hustled Newman out of some money. But that wouldn't explain why Gleason wasn't just replaced for another film, unless maybe Newman didn't want to have to explain it and look like a sucker.

I voted for The Hustler. I love them both, but The Hustler is a great movie. It's even on IMDB's Top 250 list. I like TCOM because it's about pool, and Paul Newman is awesome. But it's not that great a movie.

turns out

i watched the hustler on espn classic one time and they give some behind the scenes info.turns out they were drinkin whiskey one evening and newman wanted to play a race to 50 balls for 50$.jackie broke, newman ran like 8 balls, missed, jackie proceeded to run 50 and out.jackie gleason was actually not to shabby a player in his day.

Great Photo. I see Irving Crane next to Omar Shariff. Ray Martin, Mike Sigel, Jimmy Mataya next to James Coburn and Bruce Boxleitner, Allen Hopkins on the other side of Bruce. Richie Florence, Petey Margo, Jim Rempe, and Steve Mizerak are in the middle row. Lou Butera and John "The Dancer" Brascia are in the back row. John wrote and co-produced the film.

The Hustler gives the Color of Money the last 5 and the break. As far as depth, acting and story line the Hustler was Oscar material. The Hustler was realistic and depressing and dark as it should be.

The Color of Money acting was poor at best, juvenile script and just plain bad. Newman's Oscar was a sympathy Oscar award. Cruise' acting was decent.

The Hustler was one of the all time great classic films. It WAS a love story gone bad, with pool as the backdrop. But the pool that was shown was knock down dirty, realistic and gritty. Strangely, it brought many young men into the poolrooms. I know because I was one of the them. And it sparked a resurgence in the game, which had been in the doldrums throughout the 50's.

Even more strange was how the Color Of Money sparked another resurgence in pool. It was a very ordinary film, with a contrived dialogue and mediocre acting. How Newman won an Oscar for this role, I have no idea. Maybe Hollywood felt like it owed him one. He was far, far better in The Hustler.

Most of you must know that the film version of COM is completely different than the story in the book by Walter Tevis. Tevis' story was far more compelling. The back drop on this is that Newman wanted to play the "Burt" character that George C. Scott did such a fine job with. George could give Paul the Five and the Break when it came to acting in general and this role specifically.

I disagree that Tom Cruise is a bad actor. I think he is under rated. If you can, watch Rain Man again. Tom plays off Dustin Hoffman wonderfully in this fine film. And Dustin was superb, an Oscar worthy performance as well. Like the previous poster, Cruise's emersion into Scientology is a little bizarre. John Travolta is another long time devotee.

All I can say is Brainwashing works. Just ask Don Mackey. He mesmerized most of the top pool players for several years. Some of them still don't get it.

The Hustler, simply because when you're watching the movie, you get the feeling of being right there, at that time, and you can pretty much feel the atmosphere, even more so, sice the pool hall in that movie, "Aimes", which was really known as "Elkers", as it was just off Times Sq, NYC, and also, the pool playing between Paul and Jackie was real, as they were actually gambling for money, when it was being filmed, in which Jackie hustled $200 out of Paul.

Another good thing about The Hustler is, Jackie was a very good player himself, and had been known to gamble regularly in Elkers or another and more upscale room, "Fitz's" (Unsure of the exact name, but it was mentioned before on the Billiards Digest site last year) with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and a few other well known celebrities would hang out in that room and play.

It was also nice to see Willie Mosconi in the movie, as he did set up a few trick shots in the movie, which I think that he played himself, and they're always a treat to watch :)

TCoM, seemed a bit too over the top, as reguards the gambling and the situations, but at the same time, it was good that they had as many great players there, the late and truely great, Steve "The Miz" Mizerak, Mike Sigel, Howard Vickory, Grady Mathews, Kieth McCready and many others that were in the movie as extras :)

The Baltimore Bullit, is an all time classic, pretty much all the legendary pool players of that time, were there, and also the fact that it was about the Johnson City fiasco, made it more entertaining, and also with James Coburn as one of the lead characters, I thought that it is generally a great movie :)

Poolhall Junkies, Good movie, and some good scenes, but like TCoM, a little bit over the top, but still worth watching at anytime :)

I guess everyone has their likes and dislikes, in this choice, but for me, if I could pick 2, then it would be The Hustler and The Baltimore Bullit :), but if I could only choose one, then it would be The Hustler :)

Willie
