Mike Sigel was the tech. adviser on the movie. Mike taught Tom how to play.

And Mosconi was tech advisor for "The Hustler". Was stated in Mosconi's autobiography that Newman couldn't play at all in 1961 when The Hustler was made. Jackie Gleason on the other was actually a pretty accomplished recreational player.

Keith I was looking at the credits of the movie and I saw the name Jimmy Mataya is he the ex boyfriend of ewa mataya lawrence? (I appologise for the spelling)

He is her ex-husband. He partnered with a few others and made a few instructional videos years ago. He is the one who rolls an object ball down the middle of a table, swings his cue around and shoots behind his back making the object ball while it is still rolling down in one of the corner pockets.

I don't know if he still plays.

Is this the Jim Laurance who sometimes co-commentates with Ewa on WPBA matches? Did they just separate? I always thought that they were married cos they always seem to be on tv together, and they have the same names.

It's Mitch Laurance, Eva's current husband who co-commentates some of the WPBA matches with her.

Jimmy "Pretty Boy" Mataya was, quite a while back, married to Eva and he was a top notch pool player. I don't know if he still actively plays or not, but nothing wrong with his mouth! :) He does some commentary for Accu-Stats videos.

Jimmy was in the COM movie. He was the one that walked into the Atlantic City Tournament near the end with Eddie Felsons former horse, Julian. I can't remember if Jimmy had a line in the movie or if he just stood there looking "pretty".

Bob

Earthquake did a lot of the shooting and breaking for Tom. I don't know why they even needed ol' Mike Sigel (don't get me wrong, I admire his game and own 3 Sigel cues). Keith could have taken Mike without breaking a sweat in those days. One thing I know for sure. You will see the old McCready come back out to play and stay pretty soon. When he does decide to come back, the "top" players of today will know what it feels like to hit rock bottom.

There's a good story about Jimmy Mataya. I think it's in "Playing off the Rail." He was a degenerate gambler. At one point, cashed out all his credit cards and put every dollar he had down on one college football game. It was pretty much Russian Roullette.

actually he put it all on the detroit lions according to the book......said if he lost he was going to commit suicide. He won and had quite a bash with the proceeds.

The back-to-back World 8-ball Champion in the early 70's, Jimmy "Pretty Boy Floyd" Mataya married Ewa Swensen after meeting her in Gavle, Sweden. When Ewa Mataya won a world's title, they were the first Married couple to have won World's Titles in pool. They have a daughter, Nacole Mataya who is as striking as Ewa. According to Mataya, Wanderone gave him the nickname when he would introduce him to fans (when Mataya did the road with Fats) as "Pretty Boy Floyd."

His one line was "I ain't got no problem with it." Or something like that. So, that's a $500 payday. In the movie, he's got the 80's hairstyle somewhere between rocker and mullet.

Key Media. The first of which was called "Billiards, the Basics and the Best." On the tapes along with Jimmy Mataya were Mike "Captain Hook" Sigel, "King" James" Jimmy Rempe, and Larry "the Prince of Pool" Lisciotti.

Jim Rempe was the one who shot this shot. Mataya does all the power massé shots on the videos.

I'll say one thing.

Just thought I would throw out how pretty he actually was. This is a picture of me with him in Reno. He called me Seattle Slim (Don't know that he would now, lol) or just plain Seattle.

Jaden to coin a scottish phrase "you are a right dunder head", you canno't be serious when you say that Tom Cruise shot better in the color of money than Rick Schroder did in poolhall junkies are you?.

Come on first of all in COM crusie had a body double to play every shot bar one and that was the jump shot at the end whereas in phj rick actually took the time to learn the game so he was able to actually play the shots instead of hiring a stunt monkey to play as himself in 90% of the movie like cruise did.
