Coltrain and Clucks "An old story, but a good one"

I think so...You got Blonde hair?? Got married a couple months ago but other than that i'm good...lol!! How have you been?
Used to be blondish, until it , well, it left me. So I shaved the rest of it. I'm well, working all of the time. I still get around a little.

Coltrain

I saw Coltrain play in Nashville once during the Camel Pro event. I was in love with his game and tried to emulate him. He was very successful in those McDermott events or what have you. It's a shame about how he can't play any more. I don't think any of us could imagine what that must be like. On a funny note, I heard Nick Varner talking about Johnny and Coltrain's relationship once. He claimed the three of them were on a flight to Taiwan, or some Asian country for a world tournament (I believe). Anyhow, Coltrain was talking about how he heard there was a bunch of action over there, and he couldn't wait to get down and sneak up on them in the poolrooms. Well, according to Nick, Johnny interrupts Coltrain and says, "Yeah Mike, lots of action, make sure you let me know if you get any because I'M NOT IN!!!!"...LOL. Even Johnny knew that the Asian contingent could flat play, and they gamble sky high.

I believe it was some kind of nerve disorder to where his right arm shakes really bad....They say Nick Varner has a slight case of it also... It truely is a shame about Coltrains misfortune:frown:

Yeah, he called me after meeting up with Walden. I don't think he was very happy.

I love stories like that. I would love to hear more, like the time he came to Tulsa. I only heard stories, about Coltrane and Walden.

I heard that Coltrane got the 7 from Walden up at the Billiard Palace here in Tulsa, Ok. Think Walden won, but not sure.

Yeah, James won. I got a call for gas money from an "Remain Unknown" player.

Hey Crawfish, Did you shoot with a Steve Klein a couple years ago??
Just so happens, yes. Are we acquaintences in the pool world? That was a helluva cue. It's out west somewhere, now. Wish I had it back. That fu#$ing divorce will take it's toll on you. Ebony, burl, ivory, G-10 pin. Sick. Just sick.

My Coltrain Story

I was a kid from West Michigan, slightly before Jason Kirkwood started playin really good, so I considered myself to be the best player under 18 in the area along with Lil' Mac from Holland. Anyway, me and my friend go to Myrtle Beach for Spring Break in '93, get dead bored and I tell my buddy we need to go to Raleigh on our way back. We go to the Capital City Open just to see these champions and it didn't disappoint. Sure enough we pull up and see Johnny's TownCar with his friggin runner-up U.S. Open trophy visible through the back window, no s&*t, just collecting dust. Then we go in and Johnny is in their playin a ring game with Gary Spaeth, I knew who he was from Pockets in Lansing (coolest pool room in MI), some guy I had never seen before and Michael Coltrain. It's hard to grasp him nowadays, but at the time, I promise you, he WAS the Tiger Woods of pool, hand's down. This was the same time Tiger was tearing up the USGA Junior's, so the comparison was natural. Michael was doing the same thing in the BCA Juniors and every other junior tournament at the time. I was in awe of this skinny kid I had read about and envied for his talent and his being a protege of the best player in the country. Anyway, we just watch for a while, I think Nick Varner was there too, but then the door flings open and Tony Ellin walks in, weighing like 280lbs, talking about playin basketball with the "brothers", he said it not me. That was beautiful, seeing all my heros and Tony the Tiger sweating like crazy. I guess he threw a one hitter one time in little league and came back on his next start and threw a NO-hitter, great athlete. The next time I see Coltrain was at the BCA Junior tournament in Kansas City. Charlie Williams was there, Tony Lane, Mike Ranella, Billy Lana, Andy Quinn, Denver Barger, Jon Kucharo and a 4'8" Corey Deuel. I had to play the winner of Coltrain and Andy Quinn. PFFT. I guess. This guy had a f-ing gallery, like 50-60 people sweating our match. The other people would have maybe their sponsor or their parents watching. Pretty sweat memory, he BBQ'd me 7-3, but I made a nice out and a straight back on a 9 he had left me safe on. Later the night, he was done in the bar area with all the other stars of the day and we start playing a ring game, $5 and $5, I won $80, I was way happy. So I start talking to him, not knowing what to expect from his personality and he turned out to be really cool. He was there with his dad and his 2-door Accord (little known fact for credibility) and we went to Shooters in Olathe (the coolest pool room in America) and I end up making friends with this kid I saw as my idol. Later, we go to Corey's hotel room and this guy had paid some dude down in the hotel bar $60 dollars for twelve bottles of beer. $60 for a case! He had it all in the bath tub filled with ice. Just some stories I had and memories I will always have of my trips to the South. Thank God I won the BCA Junior qualifier.

Well, I thought I'd pass this one on.

I had been going back and forth to Danville, VA. to a place called Clucks. I had pretty much had the run of the joint for almost a month.

It is a shame Cluck never called me or I was never there when you come. I use to play with Mike quite a bit...

Beautiful...

Oh what a dream it would be to see where that Train might have gone if his condition hadn't reared it's ugly head...I'm sure it would have been quite an adventure for Mike and all us railbirds watchin'.

Well, I thought I'd pass this one on.

I had been going back and forth to Danville, VA. to a place called Clucks. I had pretty much had the run of the joint for almost a month. I had given the eight to "Bigun", the six to "Red", and quite a few other matchups. Man, this place was hoppin'. More often than not, there would be a few ladies dancing to a live band on the bar. Four big, or was it six? Anyway, 4 1/2 X 9, and the rest (6) bartables. Most everyone would bet it up, too.

So, Mike Coltrain was about seventeen. He was coming into his own, so to speak. The exact shadow of Johnny. Stance, stroke, etc. It was like watching a young Johnny, except not quite as steady. That kid had a gift from the pool gods. Anyway, he calls me up and tells me he needs to make some cash. He was playing so good, I couldn't wait to sneak him into Clucks. Sneak being the word, he was only seventeen. I told him to grab an ID and meet me at my place. Off we went.

We get there about eight o'clock. Way before "happening" time. We scope out the place, when Red walks in. "I'll take the five and the last two." "No thanks, nice talking to you." I reply. I figured the longer I waited, the better the game. (If you know me, being patient is not my strong point) Wait a minute, there is the black Monte Carlo. This is it. Bigun is here.

"You beat me with the eight last time. Give up the seven and we'll kick it off at $50 a game!"
"I'm a little buzzed. Been here since 7:00. Ask the bartender. What will you give my little cousin?"
Coltrain. Picture this skinny kid with beads, flipflops, and half grown in gotee.
"He's got the eight. Get it on."
I asked for the seven and eight, but not quite convincing enough. Eight was probably three balls the best of it at least. Hell, Coltrain was giving me the seven and the last three, and I was beating Bigun giving up the eight and winning. Here we went.

I've felt sick before, but I couldn't help showing my disgust after Coltrain was dogging it off worse than me playing Johnny even. We were stuck around $600. Coltrain pulls me to the side and was worried. Bigun was getting bored, and I could feel the inevitable move to quit winner. "I've gotta go. You boys be around later?" We all knows this means "fu#$ you, and I've enjoyed your cash." He walks out. I follow.
"You gonna quit winner on a kid? You come back in, switch to the tight table and you've got the eight."
"From you?"
"From the kid. Yeah, and bet a $100 a game. That loose a$$ rag you guys were playing on, anybody can get out."
He got outta his car and grabbed his cue with a "Let's get it on."
I pulled Mike aside and told him what was going on.

Well, I truly believe Mike is one of those people that gives weight better than getting it, just because of the psychological factor of believing you're the better player. Well, you guessed it. Mike looked like Mike. Full swing.

$1200 winner at the end. I was pretty glad I followed him out to the car. If Mike was giving up weight, jump on board. I'm not saying he beat champions for the cash, but let him play someone that is at least a ball under him and watch that skinny kid go. And believe me, at one time, 99% or more were at least a ball under this kid.

When is your book of road stories coming out?
