Combos and Dead ball question.

Hi There,

I was watching some of Dannie's new tape (:thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup: ), and at on point he is talking about a combo with three balls and talking about throw. I think he said it only works for three balls or something like that. I also remember JS talking breifly about that on his 245 run.

I understand throw and the gear like affect, but the three ball thing confusses my little mind:o .

Any help would be cool...

All I can think of is the effect of throw by the third ball. If you shoot the cue ball into the 11 ball you make the 10 straight in the side pocket.

If you shoot the cue ball into the 9 ball you miss the 10 ball as it is pushed to the right by the "third ball"

If you shoot into the 13 ball, you miss the 10 to the left by the same principal of the third ball throwing the shot off.

Here is an example with more congestion in a straight pool cluster. I hope you get the idea, I didn't take a whole lot of time to actually make the shots line up perfectly. By the look of the diagram I should have made the nine line up a little more to the left. The concept should be clear however.

The nine is dead if you hit the 2. Hit the 8 and it goes low, hit the 11 and it goes high by the throw induced from the "third ball"

A couple of key points in deadball play:

> It's often a matter of prediction, that is, exactly how much will the balls throw. This comes mostly from observation and experience.

> In a cluster, always be aware of which balls are moving first. A perfectly aligned set can be spoiled by the early movement of an adjoining ball or balls. This kind of interference is very common and is again a big experience factor.

good point rick, I should have mentioned that as a general rule you can expect slightly less throw the harder you hit the balls and of course more the softer you hit. As Rick said, very much a matter of experience, not only with the layout but with the playing conditions.

All you have to figure out is which direction the next-to-last ball will be moving across the last ball (the ball you hope to pocket). You can think of the last ball as being a little sticky so that it drags the ball it hits off-line. If you look at the shot this way, you can work out combinations with lots of balls.

As long as we're on the topic, the real puzzle comes when the target alignment features balls that are not quite frozen, yet will in fact throw. Now, add an interference ball that creates a half pocket situation, and you have nothing but....judgement. And, as 3nStop alludes, speed,spin, and amount of hit ( across the face of the first ball) are the real issues.

I think at that point it becomes important who your opponent is. Sometimes safety play is a better choice!
