99% of the time, i watch billiard matches on espn2 with the sound off. ewa laurence, has two tounges, she say's LLLLLLLeave the cue ball. a LLLLLLot of times.i can't stand it! it sounds like she just got run over by her toungue! dawn hopkins, is weak meek, and lighter than a mouse. it is reflected in her voice. boring wavery, and like she has a perpetual cold, no good. jim rempe is an ego maniac, who gives 400 possibilitys for each shot just to show how much he knows. mitch laurence, is a nice guy, but has nothing to say! good bye, mitch. jeanette lee, is a star-ego important, look at me but don't talk to me bitch attitude. so who does that leave? i saw vicki paski recetnly commentating, on the vintage womens tapes, she was pretty, sexy, strong voice, and knowledagble, bring her back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, also, i do think allen hopkins is great. he keeps to his schedule, of ok, here's what he has to do, style of commentating, and he's usually correct. well, there you have it, wish i could get the gig, people have said, between my strong voice, and vast knowledge, i'd be the best commentater in all of billiards.

espn just has sucky commentators period in all of their sport. Now matchroom sport now they have good commentators

I did catch a little of Sigel and Mitch commentating the Corey Deuel/Jose Parica match and then Ewa and Mitch doing the women's match that was on next last week. I swear that I had to hear the word 'perfect' 5-6 times in 10 minutes between the two matches.

"Where does she end up here?" "Perfect"
"This one will be tough..." "Perfect"
"How did he hit this one?" "Perfect"

Aaauughhh

Or how many times does Sigel say.....with his awhful accent......"I'm not sure I woulda played it that way, but it worked PERFECT!"

They really should research billiards before they let anybody commentate!
Let Grady be the only one to speak, with maybe Buddy sittin next to him.......that would be PERFECT!.....as Sigel says!

why not just be thankful ESPN has billiards for us to watch and enjoy? where would we be for pool if it wasnt for ESPN?

mitch laurance seems like a good guy to me, i've spoke with him a couple of times in Peoria. Allen Hopkins is the best announcer as far as i am concerned. he should do both men and women.

Ewa - B
Dawn - C
Jeanette - C
Mitch - A
Allen - A+
Lon McEachren (sp?) - B
Jan McWorter - C
Robin Dodson - C
Mike Sigel - B
Jim Rempe - B

Sid Wadell - A
Jim Wyche - B
Bill InCardona - B
Grady - B
Steve Davis - A
Jerry Forsythe - A

just my $.02

Because television production has been around since the 1940's. So much has been learned and refined with sports production from bowling to wrestling, there is no need to re invent the wheel, just do what works. That would be too easy though, pool productions look like they are making it up as they go along. At best, they are terrible, you have to wonder who is in charge of this junk. It can't do the sport much good, having such amateur quality productions and commentators who can't even speak.

Anyone expecting top notch billiard commentating from ESPN or other major network programming is unconcious of the industry itself. Have you sat through the crap they put on Prime time? With their lame sitcoms and predictable dramas. Isnt it a wonder that pay cable's HBO's Sopranos, Six Feet Under and now the great show Deadwood gets all the ovations as well as their sports shows.
Do you realize youre getting lame ass race to sevens by the same faces who feel running out one rack from the break is a monumental feat and where the commercial time is more important than the action.
Stop your whining. Go directly to AccuStats. No Commercials. No BS. Just pool. Danny Diliberto is a fine pool journalist and getting better every day. (His book will be coming out soon.) If Grady can get back with Pat Fleming we will see how it should be done.

Silencer,
I would have to agree in general with your whole take, but really who cares what Ewa sounds like - as long as they show her a few times in her fancy low cut outfit all of us heterosexuals are happy. Isn't that really what its all about?

Well at least in my favor I did not hit on the "two tongues/run over by her tongue" references that the Silencer lobbed up there.

Mitch Laurence is (in my opinion) the worst commentator on the planet! He makes me not want to watch. He is very boring and such a kiss ass to not only the sponsers but everyone. He has no opinion of his own and doesn't seem to know much about pool after commentating for the last 15 years or so. You would think he would learn by osmosis at least.

Get real - Grady is the worst to listen to - doesn't anyone else get sick of listening to him talk about how brilliant he is when he is supposed to be commentating on someone else - I have never heard someone say the word "I" more times over the course of an hour than Grady does in every Accu video he commentates in. Other than Sigel - I think he is at the top of the list for most arrogant, self-absorbed pro. Combine that with the whistle and you have a winning combination for driving the most patient pool enthusiast absolutely nuts!

At least Grady has some usefull knowledge! If you think Gradys comentating is bad.....you are the audience that espn is after!
I know I ain't the only one that could listen to Grady comentating a Bar Box Friday night tourny at your local bar! Grady has more insight on pool than any 6 people espn could come up with!
Grady and Allen would be the best 2.....imo!

grady

After being on the road for some many years and knowing all the guys, or most of the guys, listed above, listening to many more than has been listed above, Grady, Allen, Buddy Hall, and Danny DiLiberto, are my faviortes.[not in any order].

These guys do explain shots, to those who "don't know" what to do with the next two or three shots, and how to get there. Some do better than others.

However, we all must be thankful, that were as far as we are with pool and TV. I refuse to knock any airing that pool gets, [no matter who's talking], on TV and or tapes. Most who post here haven't had to fight tooth and nail to get this far.

Guys, you should be thankful, were on as much as we are.

None have to agree with my statements, but I ask you guys this, HAVE YOU EVER BEEN on the "AIR" or if so, been JUDGED AFTER BEING ON THE AIR?
How do you think you would fair?????

That job is not easy.......But, hey, let it ride.....

Recon, there just might be lots of [politics] involved in ESPN, and accu-stats.....choosing who is to be "ON" the air??

I agree with pretty much with most of Blud's post above.

It seems like everywhere you go in this obscure little sport of ours, politics seems to be a key factor in the prevention of pocket billiards gaining notoriety. Everybody is trying to chew on the same bone. There are too many stop signs, some of them created from within. Somehow new monies need to be infused, outside of the already-existing pool industry as we know it.

The recent televised ESPN matches provided a golden opportunity to capture some of the personalities of great players that I hadn't seen before. One thing for sure, they need to stop changing the rules of every single pool game on TV because, if I'm having trouble following it, I would think John Q. Public is going to as well. I didn't see anything wrong with the commentary. It must be hard to attract a public who doesn't know much about the various games.

If you want to hear some spice, try to get a copy of an old Accustats X-rated video commentated by Grady Mathews and crew, if you can find it. Now, that's entertaining!

know nothing

Know Nada I hope you dont mind if I take a little laugh at your expense after reading your post and your "nom-de-plume". Every one has a right to their opinion and you certainly have yours. But please give Grady a chance. He is one of the most knowledgable guys in the game and an educator. He does have his personality and you either like it or not. He puts his money where his mouth is. I have the utmost respect for him.
Blud I totally agree with you but some critical opinions by a well informed pool public is what any broadcaster could see as helpful. As for me being on AIR. I have over 350 network shows to my credit. It is VERY hard. It is funny to us in the industry when people say "My friends tell me I have a great voice and personality". They think it is so easy. Just let them try it.

STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!! ME AND BLUD AGREE!!!!!!!!!
LOL..........Hiya Blud.....long time no bickering!
The banter between Grady and Buddy is priceless! I forgot about Danny D, But that is exactly the same order I think for top comentators.
I could listen to Grady and Buddy comentating a 3 ball game!
