Mitch Laurence is (in my opinion) the worst commentator on the planet! He makes me not want to watch. He is very boring and such a kiss ass to not only the sponsers but everyone. He has no opinion of his own and doesn't seem to know much about pool after commentating for the last 15 years or so. You would think he would learn by osmosis at least.

Well, he must have learned a great deal. On one of last years telecasts he opined (while waiting during one of the boring push out sequences) that, "the pushout is one of the really interesting parts of 9 ball." Yeah Mitch, the pushout is just one step below the 5 minute break on my level of interest.

Ouch, I just saw the post by NoNads. I think Grady is one of the very best and most entertaining commentators. Know-nada, you will definitely be in the minority around here.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Freddie "the Beard" Bentivegna or Bill Staton. Both of these guys have been around forever, know just about everyone, and also have nice voices. Freddie, Grady, Buddy, and Danny DiLiberto are always entertaining and you can learn a ton from them. Bill Incardona is very knowledgable but he seems too uptight or too serious sometimes, and it can get tiresome. ANY of these guys is better than anyone I've seen on ESPN; Accu-Stat tapes are so much better than ESPN it's ridiculous. Sigel, Rempe, and Hopkins are legends, but they simply don't come across that well on tv.

Weenie Beanie Bill Staton is a legend. Somebody should get to this guy while there is still time and interview him on tape. He has been in action with everybody and played everything. He is a giant with a lot of stories to tell and one of pools nicest guys. The BCA Hall of Fame isnt one unless they include him. I saw him drill Ronnie Allen in one hole for a couple G's a game in Vegas during the Stardust tournament days.

I think the best are, billy incardona and nick varner! when these two guys call a match it is top rate!

Sid Wadell is without question the worst comentator in any sport and he knows NOTHING about billiards! He misses the really tough shots and goes ballistic about bread and butter shots. I can usuaaly call 99% of most shots and he gets it wrong so many times, really pisses me off watching the guy.

Sorry Sid, but stick to darts!

regardless if he knows nothing or not....he's the type of commentator that's good for any sport....he's what makes it exciting wether he knows the game or not. He is what pool on tv needs, witty and funny remarks that's enjoyable and entertaining to listen to, but of course ya gotta have someone who's knowledgable beside him to commentate on the shots. Cause if all you got is people telling you the next move and the type of shot you play where's the excitment in that really. Has anyone watch hockey on ESPN jeebus krist that'll put you to sleep.

Know Nada I hope you dont mind if I take a little laugh at your expense after reading your post and your "nom-de-plume". Every one has a right to their opinion and you certainly have yours. But please give Grady a chance. He is one of the most knowledgable guys in the game and an educator. He does have his personality and you either like it or not. He puts his money where his mouth is. I have the utmost respect for him.
Blud I totally agree with you but some critical opinions by a well informed pool public is what any broadcaster could see as helpful. As for me being on AIR. I have over 350 network shows to my credit. It is VERY hard. It is funny to us in the industry when people say "My friends tell me I have a great voice and personality". They think it is so easy. Just let them try it.

commentators

The only thing I get tired of is the commentators making a simple basic type shot that any pro should make 99 out a 100 times sound like it is one of the toughest shots around .... especially on the women's matches ...

If you will notice -- in the Classic Billiard matches, they all broke the balls from the middle as compared to the side breaking that all the pros do now, but that the old timers had a better 1 ball shot the greater percentage of time than most of the pros seem to nowdays....

I really enjoyed the Deuel/Parica match ... especially since it was someone different for a change. Can not believe that such a veteran as Parica would hook himself on the 8 ball with 2 balls left on the table for the hill-to-hill game that would have left him breaking on hill-to-hill.

Trick shot magic is getting old ... same shots over and over and over ...
Mosconi's trick shots on Classic Billiards was refreshing though ...
