Commentators talking about anything but the match in front of them

NFI WPBA 9-ball event, Brunswick Borderline Billiards, Kristina Tkach v Kelly Fisher showing right now on Billiard TV:

I don’t know who the female commentators were but these two talked about anything but the match being played for two racks (when I happened to start watching), including a nice BnR by Kristina. Literally, two complete racks where there was not a word spoken about the match being played.

Then two sentences about the match, then more drivel about the tournament behind the scenes (food service, venue), anything but the match.

Sheesh.

I like a little color sometimes but some commentators seem to forget they are covering a match when they start bullshitting they can't stop!

I prefer watching snooker these days. The play has gotten more like pool. Production values are almost always great. One of the most important things, the people in the booth realize a little silence and letting people enjoy the action isn't a bad thing! I really don't need a long winded explanation of how somebody is going to play a cosmos.

The Oneida WPA 8 Ball World Championship that was held 4th of July week suffered the same fate with male
announcers. They rambled, meandered, interviewed guests during which time they never commented on the match
underway. I could have done a better job and I don’t know much about announcing but I do know & understand pool.

The commentary is so brutal I can’t watch it.
I like to hear the sounds of the game which requires volume. I rather needles in my eye.

The one commentator drags her words and talks in questions like a 15 year old valley girl with the voice of a female smoker.

I’m happy for the WPBA and what they’re doing and wish them continued success.

Some of the men in the booth know almost nothing about ladies pool. Many look down on it and can be a bit condescending too. The producers often are happy to get a name and don't look at qualifications. The ladies play well enough to be fun to watch playing each other and can take down some pretty good men.

In the early days of streaming some of the people coming down to New Orleans tried to get me in the booth for long stretches. I have a face for radio and not much of a voice for anything. One said he would be sure I got lots of camara time. I told him, "Best reason I know not to do it!" I did get on video once. I was watching the TV table from a slightly elevated viewpoint and you can often see my blue jeans from the knee down and my shoes. Took care of any urge for fame I had.

i think mika was good

I've heard commentators from the booth that obviously never saw a pool table before. Every rack this clown would say " Do I see a 1-9 combo coming up to end the game early?" No, the 9 is on the top rail and the one on the bottom rail.
I heard a live stream commentator say "Well, will you get a look at those headlights on that waitress bringing our drinks?"
You shouldn't have to mute the match, but sometimes you're are forced to do it.
The other end of the spectrum on commentary is Scott Frost, Jeremy Jones, Danny D, Billy I., Corey and Earl. I enjoyed Earl doing commentary on 9 ball. He's a pool savant.."If he gets on the wrong side of the 4, he'll never get out." He did and Earl was right.

Well this isn’t like football where they do 1 game and go home. A lot of time these commentators are sitting there for 10 or 12 hours . The stream is free so just be happy you’re not paying for it and watch pool and stop complaining.

I think the worst was drunk Sky and Billy Thorpe commentating on stream. I think it was SVB vs. Dennis race too 100 or whatever. It came right down to the wire and those two were talking about farts. It was a tough look.

on a similar note, but not bad, were rodney morris and i think charlie hillbilly on povpool doing comms ~12 years ago. it was very entertaining. rodney cracks jokes as fast as he shoots pool. jimmy mataya also did some dui guest comm on that channel.

now and again i don't mind that stuff. depends on the seriousness of the match. i would love to hear the x-rated accustats match with grady dropping f bombs

If you've got an ''in'' with those producing pool events, often those are your color commentators.
Very few, if any are skilled in this area, and in the real sports world true announcers most often are educated and schooled in this area before they get on the microphone.
Your local news is a Great example, no tv announcers get on the 5 o'clock news right outta the gate, they have to earn their chops.
Announcers that don't get paid, rarely know how to communicate to the viewer.

Ever watch a weather forecast on a long weekend? They let the super junior/beginners have a chance and they almost always mess multiple things up during a 3 minute report. Talking in front of a camera/mic isn't as simple as the good announcer make it look.
