Comparing soccer and pool?

I am always intrigued by the regional style differences in the soccer styles of South America, Europe and Asia. How would you sum up the playing style differences in pool? Can it be compared in the same way?

Good question. I often compare the game of pool to soccer. I see the relationship between the two kind of how like the video game Football Manager simulates play in its 2d, above head view since clearly one cannot account for the true physical component of footie but more the geometry. In a rotation game, each object ball pocketing is a like a pass in the beautiful game with the final OB being the actual goal.

I think the only correlation would be the game of one pocket. East Coast and West coast Styles.....West coast is what I would call the Premiere league. Its all about scoring, looking flashy and the attack.....East coast is more Italian style as it is all about defense and moving strategically to prevent the 'other team' from scoring. A nil nil game is a good game in Italy, a 4-2 game is a good on in the Premiere league....lol Thats as close as it comes to your question...imo.

Apparently I am I the minority but I can see different styles in pool as you see in soccer. I used to play semipro soccer and I played over in Europe for a time so I am quite familiar with the different styles when it comes to soccer- i.e. Individual skill/ball skill/overall flair for Brazil, simple, effective moves from Ghana (that grew out of how hot it is there- meaning that a lot of the thing a player from Ghana does has the least body movement possible and is designed to make the opponent move rather than the player with the ball), and the more team oriented approach for the European players.

In pool I think you can definitely see differences in style- not so much in pattern play and shot selection but in the stroke style. One of the most drastic differences is between the Europeans and the phillipinos. The Europeans- think Germany- tend to be exact and textbook in their stroke style while the Phillipinos tend to be very stylistic- large elbow drop, etc.

I also think that you are starting to see a single style of stroke emerge around the world as more players are exposed to the "right" way to do things from a younger age.

Precisely what I was thinking when I started this thread. Thanks!

Soccer and one pocket are the same. A lot of moves and little scoring.
Both are boring and will put you to sleep.
When I become King they will be outlawed.

Dear "Measureman,"

In clearing out my bookshelf, I find I have an extra copy of a most excellent volume entitled "The Thirty Most Instructive Games of Chess." If you PM me your address, I'll send it to you.
