"Computer Help" - AZ is treating me like a stranger.

Did you recently install/download some type of security program? Some of these programs will cause this problem.

Howdy OHB,

Let me guess, you recently patched XP to Service Pack 2?

I read an article on how to fix this problem, but can't remember off the top of my head. I need to go digging.

If need be, PM me if you'd rather work out a date/time that you can spend upto 2 hours at the computer and I'll help you fix this problem by phone. On my dime.

I run Windows 2000:SP4 at home. I ran into that same problem, but here's what I did:
___________________
Created a new Profile. (this starts a new you, don't freak when signing in and you don't see all your icons :) )

Immediatly tested IE by going to www.azbilliards.com/vbulletin and started my sign in.

Verified I'm logged in by checking for my(your) user name at the bottom. (also in top right) [ensure that you cilcked the Check Box to remember you]

Closed IE.

Opened IE.

Clicked on "pull down" arrow of the Address bar (should only have one entry, the azbilliards site). [This verifies that the History folder in "Local Drive:\Documents and Settings\<name of your new profile>\Local Settings\History\Today" is clean]

Didn't click on it yet.

Checked Favorites (should be a default one, if not, then you got more problems [easily correctable])

Checked Cookies. (made notes so when I log back in as <normal profile> I'd know what files to delete/test. [verified file sizes, date, and time])

Went back to Address line, "pull down", clicked on the only address.

Verified if I'm now logged into AZBilliards forum.

Closed IE.

Copied Favorites "from" my <normal profile> "to" my <name of your new profile>

Pulled up AZBilliards from my Favorites (should now be the one you're used to seeing).

Verified if I'm now logged into AZBilliards form.
___________________

If you try those steps and you're still not auto logging into AZBilliards (which I know will be the case) when logged into windows as <normal profile>, there's more work to be done.

Else, keep you're new profile (if it's working like you want) and sign in using it when you visit AZBilliards.

Edit: Provided link on how to creat a new profile

I absolutely refuse to load and install SP2 because it won't allow for software having "no digital signatures". Although there is a way of overriding that feature, I feel that SP2 isn't worth the trouble of installing.

Hallaluah - "IT'S WORKING"!

Whitewolf & Donovan - I want to thank you both. I don't know which idea worked but one of them did. Working great now.

That's the problem I had when I was in California earlier this year, none of the reply buttons were visible. I could send pm's, but nothing else. Never did figure it out though, so I'm no help, lol. Peace, John.

CJ... more than likely you had/have autoupdates enabled, and got the push from Microsoft to set your flags (the boxes you put check marks in) to "fix" what everyone has been *****ing about. It's very quick with a fast connection (i.e. cable, DSL, or satelite) and you'd not notice, if you blinked.

To make your "Eyes wide shut", here's what's going on:

I deleted what I know/thought. If your smart enough to be good at pool, you're smart enough to be good a life.

This board is about pool. I'll not deviate... to much

I think SP2 is great. Stops all the pop ups. Although they have found ways around that. And your browser doesn't get highjacked anymore.

I have the same problem with OHB. And I haven't updated my system at all, the problem arose when the site was updated to look a little bit different. No, checkin the box "remember me" doesn't help at all. No, all my settings are exactly as they used to be when the automatic login still worked. No, the problem is not my computer, it must be the new forum.

Do what I did - It worked.

Go back through this thread and do what Whitewolf & Donovan suggested. Don't know which one did it because I did them both at the same time.
IT WORKED FOR ME.

When you originally started this thread, I thought how terrible this would be, and then it happened to me! Since I work out of my home office with 3 computers, I usually just let it sit open on 1 and read/post every so often. Well, apparently, there is a timed logout function as well, so now I have to login all the time, and not just when I want to post.

I have cleared the temp files, rebooted, set the options in tools, etc. - everything in this thread. Nothing has changed except the forum's new look. I am about ready to go and restore to the 17th, as that is when I knew it was still working ok.

Any more suggestions before I do that?

What can I do to get this AZ site to recognize me when I go into the room. It always used to but now - everytime I go into the room, it makes me type in my info again. Maybe some of you computer people can help me ot fix this.

I think this is done on purpose. Here we go: many time when you log in you just live the site open even when you are not doing anything. Lets say you are living your pc and going to watch tv or whatever. You are log in onto the site but you are not acctive. If there would be a 100 people like you that would log on and go watch tv than the site would be overloaded with inactive accounts which also makes the web site slower!
I'm not 100%, but I'll bet almost anything that right now it is done like this: when you log in and stay inactive it will kick you out after lets say 15-20 minutes. Thats what I think it is. There is nothing wrong in your computer, trust me I'm a comp geek and the same thing is happening here:D

Don't go back in time, this will not change anything, your computer is fine. Like I said abowe this must be set on this web site server.

Then they just implemented those settings, because nothing has changed here. BUT, I also can't just hit the icon for AZB and take me to the main page anymore, all logged in. Now I have to put in my password, etc. It is getting to be such a hassle! Why can't it just recognize me like before???

Yes, I think my computer is fine, seeing as how it is brand new and is a $3000 computer! It was tweaked to perfection. But how in the heck can I fix this problem? It was fine just a few days ago.

You can't do anything :) The way a web site recognizes you is that they put their cookie in your computer, so you don't have to log in everytime. However in this case that cookie is on a time limit. I'm not sure how long exacly , but it must be 15-20 minutes. If you have some time to waist do a experiment. Log on to the site open a forum and do nothing except for hitting refresh button every minute and you will know exacly after what time you will have to log on back again. Their cookie is like a time bomb right now and it set to go off after 15 or 20 minutes of inactivity.

When AZB switched over, they must have added a new cookie. I went into Windows and deleted the azbilliards.com cookie and PRESTO, it works again. Didn't even have to reboot. I don't have to log on, it automatically recognizes me again. And I'll bet it won't kick me off after inactivity either. Yay!

I'm not trying to flame you, at least not personally, but it's that type of mentalitythat has the unfortunate side affect of not having up-to-date security patches installed.

Many of the worms/viruses out there are taking advantages of unpatched systems. Indeed, you may remember Code Red (or was that the other one) back in 2002 or so. It was the SQL issue. Well, a patch for that came out a good 5 months before the virus hit. But a lot of computers weren't patched for that. I and several other people were those who had to deal with a couple of hundred computers, just in our group alone, as we were guilty of not keeping up on patches <cough>.

What I don't like about automatic updates is that it allows them to spy on your computer. I have been going without those patches and security updates:rolleyes: for years and I don't have any problems! All you really need is a strong firewall; 128bit encryption minimum. Oh and don't you go to any porn sites:D
