Confessions of a lurker

Thanks for the many welcoming comments. I'll try to chime in more often in the future. Hope you don't regret it.

lurkers

I pretty much agree with most of what Carl said. Also pool is virtually dead in this part of N.C.< north east>. By Billiards Digest & AZB, are the best ways to keep up with pro pool, out here. Regards, kennyratt

You are the future of the pool playing world. Never be scared to voice your opinion - no matter who needles you. The sport needs people like you.

95% of golfers in the world can't break 100. Yet golf is growing at it's greatest rate to date.

Since you have come to us and sincerely expressed remorse for you sins, you are forgiven. Say five "Our Efrens" and two "Hail Allisons" and go forth and sin no more. :D

You get my Grinning Green Rep for the day. :D :D :D

I don?t doubt that other lurkers have had a similar experience. We?re not silent out of disrespect. To the contrary, we prefer not to speak unless we have something useful to say. Still, I hope the more active members will realize that we visit because the forum is filled with friendly an likeable enthusiasts who make it a pleasure to be here. We lurk because we care. (Or is it because we can?)

Carl, I prefer to think of it as listening not lurking. I love this place and feel like I know many of the people here and I like most of them.
When you fill a room with people some of them always speak more than others, (knowledge not necessarily required). If somebody expresses my opinion well and doesn't appear to need reinforcment I am content to "listen" to the conversation whithout adding my $.02. I would be likely to do the same in person.

This thread is AZB at its best. Welcome Carl. Seems to me this place is like hanging out at a virtual pool hall. You hear a little bit of everything from all kinds of people. Definitely a class act and I could only wish it were a real location (instead of cyber space) so I could physically hang out with the people who post here.

Where is Jasmin ???

Where is the woman in Jimmy Leggs avatar ??:D

Joe, there you go dreamin' again. ;)

This is AZ Billiards, Jasmin and Jimmy Legg's avatar don't do any posting here. :D

AZ Billiards is kind of like Fantasy Island is you remember that television show. You know, "DA PLANE" DA PLANE!" Every person here can become whomever or whatever they want to be (at least until they mess up). :D

Smorgy, You are one of the funniest posters. I enjoy your posts. Regards, kennyratt

I tend to lurk and give out random rep points more than I actually post. I am here more to get info than to try and "prove" I am the smartest guy in the room.

No point in proving anything, we all know Travis Trotter is the smartest guy in the room...

I think you're doing well with becoming less shy! Keep up the good work ;)

AZBilliards IS a virtual poolhall. I visit AZBilliards almost every day, just as I do with the real poolhall. I have to come in here, check if there's some new information, a tournament coming up, anyone who have improved their run, or if DCP has messed up on another layout. The same kind of people that's on here are the same kind of people you meet in other poolhalls, and as in real life you care a little about everyone in here. The exception is that this poolhall has more than 10 000 members ;)

I just wish that I can meet all of you 10,343 members in person during the coming years ;)

The recent post by JoeyA encouraging membership and participation got me thinking about my career as a lurker. I lurked for two years before joining, and rarely post. Why? I think these are the main reasons:

1. I?m not good enough to give advice.

2. I don?t play in a league, so I can?t commiserate about league triumphs or infractions. My brother joined a league, but I don?t feel right about stealing his stories.

3. I?m not a money player, so I can?t talk about woofing, weight, or nits. I play mostly at home, to unwind at the end of the day. I still enjoy the war stories, though.

4. I don?t follow the pro tour closely. Most of what I know, I learn here.

5. I?m not a cue expert or collector. I?m a cue acquirer and user, still learning what I like.

6. When I?ve come across a topic to which I think I could make a contribution, my views have already been expressed ? often multiple times, usually better than I could. If it?s a poll I might vote, but otherwise I move on.

So my basic excuse is that I don?t post unless I think I can make a fresh and useful contribution. Unfortunately, that attitude neglects the community aspect of AZB, which might be why I feel sinful about lurking. The forum is a rich source of information, but it is also a gathering place. The active members are from diverse backgrounds, all with a shared interest in the game and its lore. It?s apparent that many have used the forum to renew old friendships or nurture new ones. I have met a few AZBers, but don't know any really well.

My behavior is no doubt a product of how I got here. I found AZB while looking for information about equipment, and the contributions of the participating members has made it an invaluable resource. So I tend to think of AZB first as a source of information and viewpoints from more experienced players than me. Yet it has also become a source of entertainment ? like wandering from conversation to conversation at a party, listening in but never talking, gradually getting to know the crowd.

You took the words right out of my mouth!!!!!!!
