Congrats to Jeff Sergent and Kevin Adam on their 1st and 2nd place finish at the APA National Singles. Jeff beat Kevin 5-3 in the finals. Also, nice shooting goes out to Diane Pizzato on her 2nd place finish in her tier in 8 ball. One last congrats for Karl Lavergne who took first in the 9 ball 4's and 5's tier! They are all from the Illinois/Wisconsin areas!

Gotta also do a shoutout to my friend Jon Bourgault from Cali, who placed 17th in the 8-Ball Classic purple tier! I guess all those recent lessons with Tang helped after all!

Also, congrats to anyone who even made it out to Nationals! It is a tough process to get there in the first place. You have to win a local qualifier first, then win at regionals and then do well at Nationals. There were atleast 160 people in the 4-5's and 6-7's tier in 8 ball. The 9 ball field is smaller, but no matter how many people were there, it still is an amazing feat to win at Nationals!

Definitely. I'm impressed with my friend's consistency; every time he tries to go to Nationals (via local, then regional) he makes it!

I tried once, and managed to make it. My local was easy, but the regional was tough. I somehow caught a gear and steamrolled every match in only a few innings. The pool gods were with me, because every shot found a pocket. I was doing stupid banks for position and running out.

Sadly I lost steam at Nationals and went two and out. D'oh!

Susie...True story! It's a tough gig just to make it to Vegas! DaPoet, from Chicago, also made it to Nationals (plus a few of my students from MI, IN & OH)...but I don't know how they finished!

Just got back this morning on the red eye. I was in the 6-7 bracket, went two and out but I'm not too worried about it. Could have played better but this was my second barbox tourney ever. The regional was the first. Learned some things.

Broke even on the $3 blackjack tables across the street after almost 20 hours of play. Circus Circus is pretty quick with the drinks too. Highly recommend the 99 cent 1/2 pound hot dog. (Actually $1.07 with tax) It will definitely tide you over for a good 5-6 hours.

Contrary to what I had heard, the Riviera isn't a bad place at all really. Sure there's nicer and more expensive places, but it works well for the pool tourney thing.

Thanks for the mention Scott! :D

Da Poet,
Just to make it to Vegas especially in the purple tier is just amazing. Having to possibly play players like Jeff Sergent, Robert Hall, Kenny Brisbon, and other super 7's is incredibly tough. When you face players of their calibur, you can just hope to get back to the table.

Will you be going to Vegas in August for teams? If so, good luck, and I hope you have lots of success.

I made it to the first money match in the 8 ball white tier, but I couldn't quite get it done this time. If only I could have gotten my lesson with Scott before hand, lol. O well theres always next year, besides I learned a valueable lesson about not playing mini's till 2 am when you have to play again at 8 am the next morning.

First, the good news. I was very happy to reach the semi-finals for the second time and actually have a chance to beat Jeff Sergent, as opposed to the thrashing I took from Kenny Brisbon two years ago. :)

Now, the bad news. Going hill hill w/Jeff and being one leave away from an additional $5000 at the minimum is going to haunt me for awhile...:(

Wow, I gotta say, does Jeff Sergent EVER lose? I was there in 2000 when he won and I wanna say he had a strong showing in 2001 when I was there again. I also think he's won since (prior to this year, of course). I know a lot of people here have a lot to say about the APA but IMHO, The Singles Purple Tier is one of the strongest amateur 8-ball tournaments in the country and this guy has multiple wins. Unreal!

Jeff has won three times that I know of in the 8ball. There have been multiple winners in both the 8ball and the 9ball.
I actually would expect multiple winners in each of the top tiers and think that they will continue. The cream usually rises to the top and that tier is
very borderline to be called Amatuer. Not taking anything away from the guys that have won in that tier level. They all play great. Most all sports have repeat winners. Some players, teams or groups are just better.

Everyone loses once in awhile on the barbox, but Jeff is like the Bobby Fisher of barbox 8ball (without the lunacy). He's one of the few I'll stop and watch play. Helluva nice guy too.

congrats to all the winners. i was in the yellow tier, had a 1st round by and lost my first match (choked it up real good). got a by in the loser bracket and came back from a 3-1 deficit to win my first match in the left side. next i had to play the girl that beat me the night before. i got up 2-0 on her and missed a critical shot in the 3rd game that would have been a win. lost that one, got beat by a safe, lost the next and got beat by a safe on the wire. wish i played better but sometimes thats just how the balls roll. with 2 bys i think i had everything in my favor but just didnt execute. hopefully ill be back next year.

Hey, I didn't know you made it to Nationals. Congrats! Nothing beats a hard-earned free trip.

Yeah, it was a tough field!

I have a new found appreciation for those folks that can travel and still bring their A game to the table. It's a strange sort of distracting element that I think only more experience can overcome.

I have to be honest and say I had mixed feelings going in to it. To me, the APA is more about the social element and the singles event is the complete opposite. Of course everyone was friendly and courteous, but I would have much rather been out there with my team. If they decided to scrap the singles tourney in favor of creating some more chances for teams to go, I wouldn't object. Anyone can play in a singles tournament against great players anywhere for a lot less effort, but I was glad to have experienced it at least once.

Edit - Thanks Cory! Yeah I got my $15 bucks out of it! lol

hey, does anyone know what that black cyclinder thing is that was in the goody bag? the only thing i can think of is a chalk holder that you can tie to your case.

I think that black tube thing is for the dollar coins you need for the tables.

I still don't like the fact that the APA does not do a random draw.
They pick and choose who plays who.
The best 7's always play each other in the bottom 16, the weak 6's are always on the top left bracket.
I think all 6's and 7's should be matched up at random.

I might be a bit biased, but IMHO that would just allow for domination of the entire upper tier by the super 7's, and I don't think that's what the APA would prefer to have happen either.

To elaborate a bit; if you did that at the National level you would probably have to do it at the Regional level as well. In that case, most mid 6's wouldn't even bother trying to qualify for Vegas since they would always have to go through some vastly superior player. You would just drive attendance at all the events (Nationals on down to the local boards) down.

Jeff is an amazing player! He earned his win. However, I do know some players who said that they will not bother trying to qualify if Jeff or another shooter of his calibur is already going to be playing in the regionals. They feel as if they have already lost with Jeff in the mix. Every given player can be beaten on any given day. However, that doesn't mean that it will happen. It seems as if there are not many of those "given days" for Jeff.
One again, congrats to all who made it to Vegas in the first place.
