Controlled Break Problems

I have been working on my break heavily lately. My nine break, IMO is pretty dang good;). The problem is with my 8ball break.

First, I line up just a ball off the center diamond and out just far enough for me to be comfortable. I am a short of the headstring.

I'd don't have a break ap, but if I opened up the power I'd say I have a very hard break. But, I normally hit 60-75% hard, to keep whitey under control. And I'm good at that, I am normally close to leaving the CB almost dead center table. Initially, the break looks killer. Excellent spread ect, but I'm not dropping a damn ball. I'm selling out to a run out. If I could sink something, the rest of the break is good enough I would have a decent shot of a run out or taking a ball or two then hooking my opponent. However, with what's happening now I'm giving my opponent that layout, and its dangerous against anyone who can run out.

If I slightly increase power, I start getting the CB to hop and feel out of control. Maybe I'm not getting my cue level enough on the increased power shots.

I'm just curious if anyone has advise going forward from the layout of my break to sinking a ball. I just need one to go and it would be beautiful!!!

Thanks for any suggestions I'll put them to good use in a long practice session tonight.

Try a second ball break. Honestly, I hate it, but my friend uses it and breaks and runs out all the time. I don't like the way the cueball sits in the mess, but it may be something that works for you. He swears by it (also what Parica uses, and I heard he plays decent :) ).

It's worth a try to see if you like it.

Yea, I'm going to practice that tonight. I seen some of the other decent players last night using it. For me, there is no controll with it but maybe its better than coming up dry.

Uhh...if what you are doing isn't working then try something else.

Location, cue elevation, speed, contact point...options are plenty- per-table and sometimes per-day.

Or- 8ball sucks!;)

I have made the 8 by breaking the same as you do many times on a 9 ft table. ALso make them using the 2 nd ball break. The problem with the 2 nd ball break for me is all the balls will come back to the rail of the side that I break from. The other way usually gives me a open table with a ball being made in one of the head pockets.

Uh... yea thats the point of the post, to figure it out and change something.

8 ball break

If you are talking about breaking on a 7 foot table I break a few inches to the right of center with a little extra low english on the ball, not even 1/2 a tip. Trying to get a good full hit on the object ball and get the cue back up table. This gets the cue ball away from the pile of balls at the foot spot and prevents most of the kick in scratches that can happen.

Making a ball in 8 ball is pretty random, if you're hitting the cue solidly all you can do really is protect whitey and try to keep it in the clear for a shot. I make a ball on the break over 75% of the time, I need to ensure an open shot. Without that making a ball on the break isn't much help.

If it's not working I move out to the rail more with the cueball, but not enough to give up control, not even outside of the 1st end rail diamond for me.

This sounds very similar to how I used to break. I'm going to revisit it and see what happens. Thanks.
