converting production cue to break cue

Does the ferule and tip need to be changed or can the tip just be changed? Back in the day we just used the same cue. I am probably just going to use the tip that is on it. How much abuse can the shaft take? It is a 13 mm shaft, presently has a Le Pro tip. Thanks, John

PS I am buying a custom cue so this will not be my playing cue.
 
yup

it prolly would not hurt to have a harder ferrule and tip put on. have you ever broke with a none leather tip? it take s lil getting used to
 
Okay, I'm not a cuemaker, but I'll tell you that I used a Joss J-11 as a break cue for 15 years, with the same ferrel and original medium tip. Awesome break cue, I really put it out there and no problems. After 1,000's of breaks the joint collar on the shaft finally began to crack and separate (mainly because I tend to stroke through the table, putting some real bend on the shaft at the end point). I bought a new shaft and gave it to my son as his first player; just like new. So, bottom line, no, you don't need a new ferrel or tip. That said, you'll probably get longer life and better action with a hard tip.

Clark the Nark, you make me chuckle posting this all over AZ.

Of course it belongs here, its a question.

I doubt Valley House cues use the most expensive ferulle material but it seems to hold up, for a while at least, as most people abuse the house cues. You can use it until it breaks and then replace with a better material.
There are better break tips available but a Le Pro will work ok for you.
