cool pool movie coming out

Stickmen has to be the worst movie I have ever seen. PHJ is WAY better. but everyone has diffrent tastes.

I read the book "the color of money" they should make that into a movie. the story is completly diffrent than the movie.

Wow, this guy stole my post. I would love to see The Color of Money by Walter Tevis made into a movie.

I sometimes wonder if a movie is crappy because the director was a schmo or if it was because some suit in Hollywood crapped all over the director's budget and then forced the Director to turn his vision into formulaic crap. I blame most bad movies on the same type of shitheads that didn't want Lucas to do Star Wars.

I did not like PHJ at all and did not care for Stickmen either.

The problem pool is going to run into is that if another good pool movie does not come out then Hollywood will place POOL in the KISS OF DEATH category.
I heard but am not sure that "prophets" will not make the big screen unless
its major markets and might go straight to rental and PPV.
Thats not a major thing as many many movie got he same route or dont even go that far. Theres a lot of name actors that have been in movies that
never made it.

This is ridiculous. You guys are obsessed with the idea of another pool movie like you're waiting for the Messiah! Yes, it's ANOTHER movie about pool. Yes, it's not going to match up to Academy Award winning films like The Hustler & The Color of Money. Did Poolhall Junkies suck? Well, if you want to compare it to Fast Eddie's flicks, then yes, it did. But the fact is, PHJ falls in a different catagory, a different genre. Had any of you seen "Clerks" or "Mall Rats", you might know what I'm talking about. It was NEVER going to compare to them. They didn't have the budget and they probably got a kick out of the quirky mistakes left in the final cut.

Just for a moment, take a look at some baseball or basketball movies. I'm not just talking about the ones everyone loves but ALL of them. You're going to find some real clunkers that hit the big screen, I assure you. They're not all going to be as good as "Field of Dreams" and "Hoosiers".

Say what you want about PHJ. The Hustler is one of my favorite films and I've probably seen it a thousand times but make no mistake of it, I own PHJ and enjoy watching it from time to time, even if the storyline and poolshots don't match up. It's silly fun and anyone who thinks there was a real attempt at making an accurate depiction of today's pool world is PT Barnum's favorite fool. It was supposed to be stupid. Think of "Dodgeball" or "Major League" and THAT's what people think of PHJ. Nobody took it seriously so why should we? Either you laugh or you don't but please, don't take it seriously.

I saw Stickmen. I actually bought it and have it at home along with PHJ, TCOM, and The Hustler (regardless of how much some of these movies suck, I've got to have them for my pool DVD library!)

I had to see Stickmen a 2nd time only 'cause I was have trouble understanding the dialog because of the accent. It wasn't bad. There's another one out there that's called Behind the 8 Ball (2 females hustle their way to pay for college). That flick looks crappy too but (and it shows a lot of T&A when I saw the preview) but alas, I'm going to have to buy it to add to my collection.

Amen, Jude. Check out "The Slugger's Wife". You can practically see the mic booms hanging in the actors faces. And, to make it really in the "straight to the dung heap" category, I am in the crowd scene when "the slugger" hits the "magic" home run. Needless to say, I didn't get my SAG card after that.

There is a book out there called "Stroke" and it is about a woman who suffered a career-ending injury in golf only to go back to playing pool. I'm not going to give away the story line, but it could actually be a pretty decent movie. However, there are a couple of situations that I would have to say sound a little implausible, by hey, that's what screen writers are for.

You should read it if you can.

In my opinion, The Baltimore Bullet is still the king of this formulaic pool fantasy movie and is a thoroughly entertaining film. The best line from that movie is, "I did teach you everything you know, but not everything I know."
John

You think an old hackneyed, cliche line like that was the best line of the movie??

Celtic's right, PHJ sucked. I made the mistake of buying it before I'd seen it and I wish I could get my 15 bucks back. The Hustler is by far the best pool movie so far and probably ever will be. It's amazing how the director, writer, cast, etc. captured the reality of the game in that movie. When Eddie is having the picnic with his girl and is telling her his feelings about pool you can really tell that the writer had a true passion for the game. I think the problem with the newer pool movies is that they put too much unbeleivable stuff in them. The Color of Money was alright but I hated how Tom Cruise acted like he was mentally retarded through the whole thing.
I think Tom Cruise did a great job in TCOM. There really are talented players out there who have no clue what it takes to get the big money. Those players are happy with winning $10, $20, and $30, showing off, and wondering why they can not get anyone to gamble with them in the end. Cruises character had to be thick headed so YOU felt the frustration Paul Newman felt when trying to teach him to hold back, lay down, and wait for the money to come to him.

Come on Whitewolf, Predator was a great movie but action drove that movie, the ending might have been predictable but the action throughout was the drive, seeing not only Arnie fight the predator but also seeing Jesse fight it in his own style as well as the Indian with the bowie knife. Plot and storyline was NOT what made Predator a great movie, the action was. Take a movie like Happy Gilmore, another great movie, but it was NOT good because of the storyline or plot or the golf action for that matter, it was good because of the comedy. If not for the comedy and Adam Sandlers antics that movie would have been left with nothing and gone from great to crap.

That is the problem with pool hall junkies, the movie had nothing to back up its weak plot and storyline. It did not have the action of Predator, it did not have the comedy of Happy Gilmore, it had the same weak plot and predictability but it did not have that X-Factor that made those other movies great.

Whats a good movie? Well other then the obvious Color of Money and the Hustler which were great movies. Good Fellas, Godfather 2, Pulp Fiction, LA Confidential, When Harry Met Sally, Bubba Hotep, The Wanderers, X-Men 2, Lethal Weapon, Tombstone, Bright Lights Big City, Theres Something About Mary, Vertigo (just cause you mentioned AH), Chicago, Lady Jane, I could go on and on, there are alot of good movies that had something that made them great. I picked a wide range of movie types as well just to show I am not into one specific type There is nothing in PHJ that I find made that movie worth watching in the slightest and you can claim "I have trouble putting this into words" but seriously noone is coming back at my reason with anything other then "gee I liked it!" so I would not go attacking my debate skills given that is what I have to deal with as a response. If you liked that movie all the power to ya, what can I say but there is no accounting for taste and that has been known for centuries. I am NOT the only one that does not like PHJ though, so "It was fast paced. Maybe PREDICTABLE, BUT WHO CARES?????!!!!! - except maybe you." is a odd statement since alot more people then just me saw the movie as pretty bad.

The acting was good, not terrible

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

All I can think of is "Did I stutter?"

Most people who arent actors can act halfway decent. Mars Callahan is by far the worst actor on the face of the earth.

Theres Something About Mary was supposed to be funny, that was it's purpose of existence so in that regard it succeeded and did so extremely well. It is not movie making compareable to The Godfather or Casablanca but it was never meant to be. You have to judge movies on what they attempt to do and whether they succeed in that goal. If you do so then TSAM succeeded in what it set out to do, and that was be a damn funny movie that made people laugh. You cannot compare apples to oranges when it comes to movies, you have to judge them based on their genre and what they set out to do. You cannot compare TSAM as movie making to say Pulp fiction, they are totally different forms.
