Coring Shafts

M
I just ordered a Meucci Kielwood shaft. I contacted them after reading thru this thread and they answered "No, we do not put foam in the tip end of our Kielwood shafts." I also asked the weight and was told they are all around 4oz. Very nice to be able to custom order thru the website and they offer a discount for Veterans.
I found that 29.5” and 30” shafts are often required by some brands to produce a 4 ozs.and heavier Kielwood shafts.

Custom cue makers do a better job at selecting heavier blanks and can build 29” KW just as heavy. It always comes
down to the individual building the shaft & the available wood inventory. There isn’t any good reason to settle for less
or having to order a 13mm shaft instead of a thinner 12.5mm shaft that is always going to be lighter because of mass.

Cory Barhart, Jim Pierce, SCDiver2112, Jacoby Cues, Schmelke Cues and others if you look.
I won’t name the cue makers that told me what I wanted could not be built without coring.

They were all talking out of their ass because it took awhile, but I ultimately located builders
that had no difficulty building a heavier uncored KW shaft and no weight had to be added.

Now go buy whatever you want and hopefully are delighted with the outcome. I am merely
forewarning readers that there’s cue builders that are either lazy, ignorant or just untruthful.

I can’t know how you feel about this but when someone tells me something cannot be done
& then I find someone that builds what I want, I question the other person’s cue building skills.
Jacoby cores their keilwood shafts with balsa wood. 100 percent sure about this. I called and asked during the ordering process of a custom keilwood for my Mottey. The purpose is to reduce weight and front end mass. Their ferrules also have small drillings through them to reduce weight. This reduces front and mass, therefore reducing squirt that’s the main purpose of.keilwood shafts. Along with more power like carbon.

Jacoby Cues can build a KW shaft that is not cored and w/o any weight added that is heavy.

They actually built a KW shaft with my specs (4 ozs) but when it was ready to ship, the specs were miscommunicated to me by someone in sales I had never dealt with.

So I declined the shaft and ordered what I wanted from a different cue maker who was capable of building what I wanted.

Later on Alec in sales contacted me and when I told him what happened, he went right to Tony whom I had discussed what I wanted. He built the shaft twice to get my specs but he did it.

I know it can be done and now I chuckle thinking about the other cue makers that told me what I wanted couldn’t be built, How pitiful that seems since there are 4 KW shafts in my case proving they are wrong.

I happen to be at the pool room writing this post. I am playing with a 12.85 mm , flat faced. radial pin 4.0 KW shaft and I have 3 more KW shafts I included in the photo. Tony at Jacoby Cues is a talented cue maker and very congenial to talk with.

Thanks man. I will reach out to him specifically. BTW beautiful Scruggs. Those flat faced are like finding hen’s teeth. Bet it plays amazing.

A little better view of my TS cue……I feel fortunate to have gotten it. It was built for another Azer’s wife.
She didn’t care for how it turned out or whatever the reason was so he put it up for sale back in 2005.

I jumped on it as soon as I spotted it on eBay. In hindsight, it was a steal of a deal for what I can get now.
I could never sell this cue. It plays so amazing and looks so classy without being overdone in its design.

From what I understand, Tim didn’t make many radial pin flat faced joints and 3/8x10 seems to be more
popular. All my other flat ivory joint cues are 3/8x10 and 3/8x11. I had a Mottey cue but traded it away.
