Coring Shafts

Which cuemakers core kielwood shafts.., that you now ?
Are you referring to something like the PureX Infuzed?

Yes. I would like to know of cue makers that build solid pieces of kielwood shaft without coring them.

I'm pretty sure most are at least partially coring the front end to reduce mass, but I would think almost any of them would skip that part if you asked.
Off the top of my head, I know Ryan at RAT Cue Repair doesn't core them unless you request it.
I'm pretty sure Schmelke is all solid, but a call to Dave would confirm that.
Diviney's Trans-K is lightened, but I bet if you ask Pat, he'd make it any way you want.

Could also talk to Jeff Prather and either have him build it to your specs or buy one of his blanks to give to the cue maker of your choice. Jeff sorts/grades his stuff and since he was one of, if not the first, to use Torrefied shafts on pool cues, I doubt you'd find anyone that knows more about it.

Thank you very much for your imput. I was going to ask you who was your first choice, but I think that you answered that question by your remark about Jeff Prather.
What is your take on Richard Hsu and his well known Hsunami shafts?

I had a first Gen Hsunami and an early Trans-K and they played fine, but I didn't care for the hit/feel. I don't think I've really been able to tell much difference in any of the solid KW shafts I've had. I suppose if you can tell the difference in ferule material on Maple, the same would apply to KW.
I was very happy with the Schmelke I had and wish I would have kept it, but I was determined to go to CF shafts and sold it along with many other wood shafts I had at the time. Now I'm going back to wood....

The Prather blanks I had were finished out by Reuben Fisher. The only "production" KW I have currently is a Jacoby. They are cored, but it is filled with balsa, so to me they have a little better hit/feel than the foam filled ones.

I haven't tried a second Gen from Hsu. I really don't know if the darker KW is much different that the lighter stuff, or if it's mostly just color that changes.

I have to say, from an appearance standpoint, the McDermott KW shafts that are listed on eBay look very nice and I've been tempted to pick one up, but so far, I've resisted that urge. I think they are only in 38/10 and McD QR joints.

Have you considered A Roasted Solid Ash shaft?

Have you considered A Roasted Solid Ash shaft?
I remember back when Bergman first started using Kielwwod and he told me the blank came from Prather, I went on Jeff's site and saw them, but I've never really considered getting one. Not sure I want any more options....lol

I see he still has some for sale.

AFAIK just about all KW shafts out there are solid(or laminated) KW. Meucci 'might' lighten the front-end like on their Pro but i'm not positive of this.

Jerry Rauenzahn told me about Prather. Supposed to be the “original” of Torrified shafts.

Schmelke can build you a heavier weight Kielwood shaft built to your specs.
Jacoby Cues can do it as well. You can contact Alec in Sales Dept. Tell him Matt referred you.
SCDiver2112 (forum member) is successfully building exactly what you want. Contact Scott.

I selected Jim Pierce to build my last 2 Kielwood shafts that are flat faced wood, 29” long, not
30” or even 29.5”, 12.6 mm & 12.75mm, and weigh 4.0 ozs. and 4.15 ozs….no coring- all wood.
Both shafts play fantastic & so does my first KW shaft (Barnhartt radial) 29.5”, 3.81 ozs., 12.85mm.

The best advice I can offer anyone looking to get a Kielwood shaft is don’t go lighter in weight than
what your current cue shaft is. Match the KW shaft to duplicate the specs of the cue shaft you play.

Don’t believe any cue maker telling you a heavy KW shaft can’t be made without having to add weight
because of the torrefication process so your cue can be the weight that you want the shaft to turn out.

They’re either ignorant, lazy or don’t have the knowledge nor skills to build exactly what you want. Any
talented cue maker that builds Kielwood shafts should be capable building what you want without having
to add weight to the shaft afterward. I searched for months contacting different cue makers. It can be done.

If you wanted a heavy Kielwood shaft than what most tend to average, you need a heavier blank than this.
The majority of the KW shafts typically use front end coring for mass reduction unlike how I wanted it built.

I just ordered a Meucci Kielwood shaft. I contacted them after reading thru this thread and they answered "No, we do not put foam in the tip end of our Kielwood shafts." I also asked the weight and was told they are all around 4oz. Very nice to be able to custom order thru the website and they offer a discount for Veterans.
