Corner Billiards closing?

Saw a sign up for a liquor liscence application for new buyers in the window.

I was told if prospective buyers don't make a deal the place closes down regardless.

Considering the prospective buyers will run a league oriented, high dollar per hr room, where will the solid players migrate to ?

Maybe Broadway or Masters or Spin City.

YEP, I was there tonight. The "Prospective Buyer" is none other that Amsterdamn Billiards. By August 15th it will either be a Daune Reade or Amsterdamn Billiards.
 
I've heard it's Amsterdam as well.

Anyone else remember the thread that popped up here 6 months ago or so, speculating about Amsterdam's lease ending?

Seeing as how I'm less than a mile from Corner, I wouldn't mind Amsterdam coming a little closer to me =)

Amsterdam is defiantly moving, I hope it works out or NYC may be with out a good pool hall at all.
 
Amsterdam West is bigger than Corner Billiards so I'm guessing that they're going to have to sell some tables.

We only got room for luxury condos that look like public housing (except tenants live on credit cards rather than federal dole outs), so... it only makes sense.

THAT SUCK WHEN I WENT TO corners i could never get a game ..Someone going to be very pissed when i get there ..
I have friend who plays out of there so now he going to b pool roomless..
O well Hope he fine a new room soon ..I say come out Masters in Queens the tables suck but as long as there pockets we can play ..Right ..????..

I just heard that the deal is done and Corner will soon be the new home for Amsterdam Billiards.
 
Are they going to get rid of the employees of Corner Billiards or will they live happily ever after with the employees of Amsterdam's.

I guess Tony R. just came full circle!
 
I just received a message from a buddy there telling me I should clean out my locker by Thursday. That is the last day of Corner Billiards.

I guess this should serve as notice for all regular players.

Upon reading this post, I called Corner Billiards. When they confirmed this, I got right into a taxi and went there to get the three cues in my locker out. Twenty one dollar round trip cab ride, but I wasn't goiong to chance losing three cues.

I urge all of you having a locker at Corner to get your stuff out of there without delay, just as I did.

It's a sad day indeed, for, although I love Amsterdam Billiard Club and its management, I have a lot of fond memories from Corner Billiards.
 
Wow that is crazy. Corner was my home room when I lived in NYC and I remember turning in my locker key and Arthur saying, 'you'll be back'. I never did, when I heard they had renovated I decided both times I went back to the city I would prefer to remember it as it was.

No doubt there will be many who wont hear about this in time. Until tonite everyone thought it would be closing in September. It wouldnt be the first time for people to lose cues this way.

yeah,,,before abc jacks the price of the lockers. there are going to be lots' of "orphaned" players when this is done,,,and anyone who knows the manhattan pool landscape knows exactly what i mean. corner has been a second home a many players and that ambience will be done. abc taking over corner is such a morally wrong thing. it's like microsoft buying google or ebay.

but corner's former owner and still building owner will make out great in the deal. even though abc is probably paying up the wazoo on the lease, they got lucky because there was no where else to go that had corner's convenience. leasing that space not only allows abc to maintain their business model, but it eliminates a major competitor as well.

On the other hand,you might want to consider feeling fortunate to have a place to play at ALL. You could be like me and be pretty well forced to play on a bar table,just because the bar tables in town are the only ones with decently fast cloth,or on an 8 footer with 2-car pockets,slow cloth and literally 20 yr old ball sets,LOL. The closest 9 footers are pretty much a 2 hour drive. Tommy D.
 
After reading SJM's and Cuechick's posts, it made me sit back for a bit and think back at when I first went to Corner Billiards to play in their league. Arthur welcomed me right away, the employees were great players too (Caroline Pao, Liz Ford, etc.), Arthur met his wife Nancy, I met my main squeeze who is now one of my bestest friends, and scores of others. Like Lara, I didn't go back to Corner after their renovation and I don't know what it looks like except from seeing it on their website.

Another end of an era I guess.

it hasn't been that different to begin with. corner might be cheaper by a smidgeon. but the heirarachy of "favored players" will shift.

and corner has their punch cards, abc has it's power play.
