Still Looking For Cortland Linen #12.
Dom_poppa, photos of the cue build are posted in the Cue Gallery "Cue In Progress"

Spktur.....I understand Hurlbert has brought out some new colors. I think the difference with
the new Irish Linens is the source and type of flax and the twist. Cortland was hand twisted
and the new linens are machine twisted and the strand diameters were all symmetrical and
uniform which was much harder to produce. That's probably why Cortland went away due to
the higher labor & production costs, or at least that's my supposition.

Thanks for the photo of the #256 Hurlbert; thank goodness I found some Cortland Linen #9
for my cue being built. It's green speck instead of black speck but fortunately it's still original
Cortland Linen which is more important than the look of the wrap on my cue. Blue Mountain
and Hurlbert Linen wraps just feel different than Cortland Linen and I've never found any
other wrap. leather or another linen, that feels as good as Cortland Linen does.

I have Cortland Linen wraps on my '85 Runde Schon, Tim Scruggs and Paul Mottey cues.
As far as I'm concerned, it's the best wrap material, especially on a cue with old school design.

Sure would be great if Santa brought me some Cortland Linen #12 (white w/ black speck).
He doesn't even have to leave it under my tree this year either..................I'm easy to please.
Santa can just leave me a note telling me where I can get some, and hopefully pretty quickly.

Jeez......That's a rare find. I wouldn't mind having that for my Palmer pool cue. I think I'll try scoring it and thanks for the suggestion.
If you're inclined to get it, since it was your find, I'll just stand down and you can go have it. Rather than go with all black linen wrap,
I'll stick with the Cortland Linen #9 I was able to get. It would have been great, and maybe it still might, to find some #12 for my new cue.
Thanks for the referral about the Pelican.

Is There a Doctor in the House?

But seriously, it's all black.

Roughly 50 yards is required to wrap the average cue.

Jay

Approximately 5 cues since a typical cue wrap takes 50 yds. I do no know that to be a fact but I've read that on AZ before.
My cue-maker also said the 50 yds (Cortland #9) that I recently had shipped to him should be sufficient for my new cue's wrap.

The seller on the Pelican on ebay that closes in 35 minutes insists that the color of the Pelican fishing line he's selling is green. It says black and sure looks like black to me but maybe it's dark green. I've never seen a dark green pool wrap, let alone even try a pool cue wrapped with Pelican fishing line.

The auction has a high bid of $127.50 and I'd bid over $300, even $350, if it was Cortland Linen but I don't want to risk buying this spool of Pelican since I know nothing of it as a pool linen substitute and the color isn't what I'm looking for either. Perhaps it would indeed make a beautiful pool cue wrap but since I already sent my cue-maker 50 yards of #9, I am going to pass up buying the Pelican.

I'm tempted to buy it Pelican but it's not worth the gamble when I have some #9 already. Besides, Cortland Linen #12 has been and remains my objective rather than settle for an inferior brand or a different color. There has never been a wrap as nice as Cortland Linen and so why bother to even thinking about changing now.
The ebay auction for the Pelican ends @10:08 am (PST) today.

Blackwidows.....I have a hunch....just a suspicion...... that the spool of Pelican could be a really great find.....but I just don't want to make a purchase on a suspicion or some intuitive feeling it's rare only because I'm not familiar with it.......oh well, nut at least I still have the Cortland Linen #9.

I betcha someone on AZ knows the true worth of the spool of Pelican and isn't posting a single comment on purpose and are just waiting to buy it at the lowest possible bid amount. Oh well, this may become one of those live and learn moments.

Can't find any Cortland Linen #12 but I would consider a different Irish Linen or Silk fishing line but it has to be hand twisted, not machine twisted and cannot be braided.

I'm open to suggestions since I've never tried silk before and presume it would be a acceptable substitute.
I'm probably check with my cue-maker before actually buying a different wrap than Cortland.
However, I need a bird in the hand for him to comment and compare with the Cortland Linen #9 I've already sent him.

Cuttyhunk "Irish" linens

#9 .025" diameter. This is why it was used for cue wraps. The .025 is the magic number.

#12 is .031" diameter

The problem is competing hobbyists.

DYK... .025" # 9 is also used in all three major model shipbuilders sizes for scale rigging. The model ship builders use the white / green spec and DYE it black. Could you imagine.. They can use ANY color and dye it. So to them it has little meaning except when used it makes their models more realistic.

There are collectors that collect the wooden spools for the label artwork. Cortland not so much, but Zane Grey, Ashaway, many others feature keen foil graphics that are collected. A lot of these collectors remove the line and throw it away, or remove the labels and then throw the spool and line away.

That's a little information about why its always bid up on Ebay, its not just cue freaks.

Thanks.....I was unaware of the other applications.......batalarms suggested to me to try searching under fishing lines instead of Cortland Linen or Irish Linen. I found a lot of brands and types including some light weight Cortland lines but these were not suited for pool cue wraps due to the thin diameter of the line.

Your post helped to expand my understanding of this matter......"Cudos" on your knowledge about this subject. I'm speaking with my cue-maker tomorrow to go oven since we're getting down to probably 60 days and counting down until completion.

p.s. You also have the nicest Steve Klein Cue I've seen (Cameo) in your inventory.
