Could SVB be the G.O.A.T. ???

The G.O.A.T. should always be thought of as - pick a player in their prime, take all the money out of your bank account and put it on that player to win it all in any applicable game (8/9/10/1-hole/14.1/banks/3-cushion...).

Do you feel pretty comfortable doing that with Efren? Do you feel the same/less/more with Shane? How about Earl? Sigel? Mosconi? Lassiter?

It gets clearer who's in the conversation. Efren will always be my pick, no human being beats him at anything in his prime when it really counts.

Did Efren play one pocket in his "prime"?

For anyone who may know, what was his speed in say has 20s before coming to the United States? In 1985, he was 31.

He did not play 1p before he got here. He was robbed for a few months-maybe more by several guys, though i dont think the bets were high-then the tide turned and it was all over for everyone. I think the Beard was the main guy to teach him how to play.

I think Efren has said that he was at his best in pool in the 1970's.

He did say that, but he was wrong.

One thing we learn with lots of data to analyze is subjective impressions on issues like this are poor.

Kind of funny to say Efren did not know when he has playing his best.

I think we’re dealing with an ESL problem here.

I imagine that Efren, like probably all great players, hit the ball PURER when he was young.
...but as you start to PLAY the game at a higher level, you lose some of that purity
because you use that uncanny accuracy less and less....you play better position and
learn things like percentage shape....the shots get easier and easier when you play at a
higher level.
Then some day you realize that a bunch of your pet shots don’t belong to you any more.

But you’re a far better player.

Does Fargo have an area to find FRs on a player for say the last year? Im just wondering how much Oscar has improved since learning so much from Johann in the Boot Camps as he says?

Several of the older Filipinos also have told me that Efren played his best pool when he was very young (late teens to early 20's). This is a familiar theme with players like Keith and Cole and several others. Keith's peak was his late teens, believe it or not. This was before all the distractions took over and he was just a pure pool shooter. By age 23 or 24 he was already showing signs of burnout. That said, Keith continued to be a formidable force for a long, long time as long as he could stay on the straight and narrow.

Keith is a whole different story than Efren.

Best in the US now? Yes
Best in the world now? Probably. But not a convincing choice until he wins more major international tournaments.
GOAT? No way!

GOAT means different things to different people. I think Efren will always be remembered for his ability to get out, anytime anywhere. His nickname ciuld have also been Houdini. He must have more magical shots than any one else.

I agree to most people here. World G.O.A.T has been taken by Reyes. Try US GOAT, oops, even US people won't agree who is their GOAT.

I will reserve my opinion to see how he rates when he gets into his 40's and 50's. Efren is the king up to this point. There aren't many videos around when he was still in his 20's. The guy was a monster. Saw him play at Reds in Houston and he was something else to say the least.

Really good player but best ever that would be no. One pocket efren would be king. Nine ball earl or Johnny would be king both world champions Johnny had one of the best 9 ball breaks ever. Both shot lights out both were better than Shane in there prime.

So, the question is: what does Shane have to do to knock Efren from GOAT status?

1) Walk on water
2) Change water into wine.
3) Come back from the dead.

Yea, that might do it. Then again, maybe not.

until Buddy Hall arrived right? another GOAT candidate

personally I don't think Efren was as good as good as Parica

I'd say any two out of the three and he'd be close.
