Could this fly?

Just suppose there was a pool event - lets call it the World 9 Ball Open. Entry fee $2000. Anyone that pays (male or female) gets to play and the prize structure would pay back 10% of the number of entries. Room owners could run satellite tourneys with top prize of a paid entry to the big tourny. Lets call it a $100 entry fee to play in the satellite so a room would need 20+ in the satellite to send someone forward. The room could run unlimited satellites.

Ok so this sounds like the WSOP - but since it worked there why wouldn't a similar concept work for billiards? Obviously the logistics for something like this would take a lot of work but let's not worry about that part right now - just whether you think the concept would work and give you a business boost. No harm in asking some of your regulars what they think too.

It works in poker because everyone goes in with the belief that they have a chance to win money in a tournament, if they don't get horridly unlucky. In pool, 99% of the people are aware they don't have a chance.

Yep poker is all about the luck of the cards and a certain amount of smarts as a player (notice I didnt say skill).

In pool I'd say there are plenty of skilled unknowns out there that on any given day can take down the best (as we know them). I'd wager that the Reyes, Stricklands, Fishers and Lees of the world would have a tough time in a field of 500+ players.

Could you find that many backers that have $2000 each? Most the PRO level players would not put up their own money at that price. We had people in our last tournament that had to borrow $30 for an entry fee and had 2 months notice just for that. But at least the idea is original. If everyone brainstormed with constructive ideas we would eventually find some that worked I am sure.

I'm thinking along the lines that most would try to get in thru a satellite (read biz for pool rooms). Some with deep pockets would just pay the entry. I don't know how many of the known pros would play but your best room player might never have another chance to play with the top dogs. For now it's a concept in hopes of getting some positive feedback and ideas rather then a negative response such as from Cephalus saying 99% of people have no chance which I think is bs.

This satelite concepts sound great..like IPT...what ever happened to them? Its seem no one ever talk about them anymore? I thought IPT had a great vision but knew that they had a pyramind scheme going especially with Kevin T. at the head. What happened to Andrew?

My understanding of the IPT was that it had a limit to the number of players that would be part of the "tour" and that there would be some sort of guaranteed pay structure for being a part of it. I think IPT was doomed from the start only because Trudeau was involved and he had no ties to the billiard industry. Personally I'd like to see a big dollar annual event that's open to anyone willing to shell out the entry or get in by way of satellite without someone like Trudeau involved.
