Coverage of mosconi matches in progress

best in the world?

:p

Delighted Appleton defeated SVB (for the 8th straight time, apparently), Europe deserving the overnight lead.

C- is a pretty generous rating, considering his record.

Some fabulous pool played by both teams, really looking forward to the rest of this

I loved Appleton's reaction after the match, when Jim said that he and Shane were arguably the two best players on the planet.

Darrel's response..."Niels is the best player in the world."

Seventeen of the twenty US Moscocni teams won at least eight matches, and just two of them won less than seven, one of those chosen entirely by Matchroom. Less than eight matches won would be very poor and establish this team as one of our four worst ever.

We need to win this and anything less would be disappointing. There are no rebuilding years in pool. The time to perform is now and if we don't, we'll need to look at ourselves objectively in the mirror.

Wha wha whaaaaat, ,
Most of those yrs we were the over whelming favorite , now we are the decided underdog
This team is the product of rebuilding ,, built with the team building concept and after day one it looks like it's having positive results ,,

Day 2 matchups look like they favor Europe over the USA.
A win by the young guns in the first doubles match would be huge and would give the team a much-needed momentum boost to start day 2.

I like Corey in the slngles and SVB with Schmidt and Deuel in the doubles for a 3-2 USA win today!

We've been the underdog in each of the last three Mosconi Cups. Last year, we were 7/4 odds to win at the bookie shops.

Team Europe is weaker than that of last year, as they are sitting world champions and hall of famers Souquet and Immonen this year. FYI, Souquet, undefeated at last year's Mosconi, looked to be in great form at the just-completed Japan Open.

We can beat these guys, and only someone who has given up on the quality of pool in the US will be satisfied with anything less than a win.

Moral victories in the country that invented nine ball? I don't think so.

Really bad days for Shane --- no question about it.

Racks played

Full team match 0-1
Teamed with Bergman 1-5
Against Appleton 3-5

Fifteen racks played and just 4 won for Shane.

Tomorrow is another day. Schmidt was the man of the day on Mosconi day one and special mention goes to Justin Hall, who also looked solid, and whose bank of the six ball after a Deuel mistake vs. World Cup of Pool champions Appleton and Boyes at 3-3 proved to be the match winner.

Grades for day one

John Schmidt A
Justin Hall B+
Corey Deuel C
Justin Bergman C-
Shane C-

Looking forward to seeing who brings it on day two.

I would give Schmidt an A+. He was stellar, fearless and seemed comfortable. Lots of pressure as the first singles up cause no one to blame but yourself and Gray was playing as equally as strong. Hopefully John instilled some of this in the others last night.

Hall a B cause he gets dinged for jumping the cue ball off the table on his break in the first match and the first bank he had in the doubles match, it was a hit and hope. He also left Corey some tough position play and I will say that Corey was up to the task and pocketed some tough shots under pressure.

The rest I agree with.

USA needs to win a lag (0-5) and kick better. Bergman missed an easy kick when the 2 and the 8 were tied up on the top rail. He should have been aiming for the outside of the 2 ball, skimmed it and the cue ball goes down table. Instead he went for the inside of the 2 ball that was tied up to the 8. Corey slammed 100 mph at a kick for no reason (think it was a 3 ball). Appleton got lucky twice on kicks that resulted in a freezing the cue ball and hooking back. But you sometimes have to make your own luck.

Today is the day that the USA best player, SVB, is not able to play a Singles match due to the rules of the event and the setup of matches. But he gets two doubles matches and must rise up. He gets to play with the two elder, experienced players as well. Schmidt, the calming influence first, to get SVB in the right frame of mind.

I would give Schmidt an A+.

He missed a shot to lose his rack in the team match, and that's why he got an A. Of course, he's the only guy on Team USA who still has a chance for straight A's in the four day event.

Mark Wilson just posted on Facebook "many people feel that we displayed some sort of breakthrough by losing 2-3???? I am afraid that I do not understand nor will I ever.

Tonight we find out who we are"

He has the right mindset for this job.

I agree with Mark on every point but one. Actually, we'll find out who we are this afternoon! At least in New York City we will.

It really wasn't an impressive performance by the US. We lost 21 games and won 15. Our best player didn't win a match. We looked shaky, and made a lot more mistakes. If things keep going the way they went Monday, it's not going to be a fun next couple of days. But if Corey and Justin B can settle and just play pool like we know they can, and Shane can start scoring, things might change.

Anyone doing commentary today? I'm hoping so for those of us that can't get off of work and their place of employment blocks livestreams. :(

This should say enough..

Darren is classy. Always says nice things and superlatives about other players. Cannot say same for Mika "Diva Tantrum Queen" Immonen and Imran "I am God" Ibrahim
Thank god this year all are well behaved pros :D
