Cracked Ferrule?

Sealegs, where is the chalk that is supposed to be on the tip?

1%, glad you are getting your cue taken care of.

My 314-2 started like that, and eventually grew to this-

It's may be a little trickier to fix in my case, because it's a blank piloted for the united joint by Mezz. Does anyone know if Predator handles Mezz/Schon piloted shafts any differently?

Anyway I sent some photos to the dealer, let's see how it replies.

Until we know for sure we shall call it a cratch;). I have heard ferrule problems make all kind of strange sounds, clicks, buzzes, pings etc.

I shot with a loose ferrule once and it made a noise that sounded like "oh crap" but only on the shots I missed.:embarrassed2:

Ld shafts

If I was to buy a LD laminated shaft and pay out the extra money to get the best,
First
I would find out which after market LD shaft maker makes a Laminated LD shaft that will hold up to normal playing conditions.
Easy way would be to talk to the cuemakers and the cue repair guys.
And ask about problems that the laminated LD shafts have and which aftermarket LD laminated shafts have the most problems.
Problems like the shaft warping, ferrules cracking, broken tenon, or laminates delaminating, shafts cracking around the ferule, shafts cracking around the joint.
Sneaky pete shafts with no collar cracking or delaminating.

Second
I would find out exactly how much less deflection it has compared to other Laminated LD shafts.

Third
Is I would check and make sure you fully understand their return policy.
Ask the shaft maker what do they warranty and what they don't.

Forth
Is don't buy a after market LD laminated shaft that has a horrible history.
If you do make all the mistakes that is listed above like me, then you my as well post picture of the broken stuff on AZB so everyone will think it will never happen to them.
And you can bypass all reasonable advise ;)

You can also see it at the tip end. Looks like it may be all the way across soon.

I would re-tip the shaft using a carbon fiber pad under the tip to help arrest the tip-end crack.

OB cues uses carbon fiber pads on all of their shafts/tips so as to prevent their ferrules from damage/cracking. You can order the carbon fiber pads from their website.

Most pads are just fiber pads... might work ok, but the carbon fiber pads make more sense IMO.

Regards

1) that's a crack, and developed under the tip like mentioned above

2) neither pad would save the ferrule from falling apart eventually

3) the ferrule can be replaced with a new one without losing LD features, you just need to find a repairman skilled in this kind of work

In short, you could play with it until that ferrule gets broken - OR take measures before that, which I recommend :)

I have the same shaft. Its the 30'' model. After 1 month mine cracked the same way. The dealer i bought it from didn't help me at all replacing it or repairing it. So... I am still using it with the crack in it.. Plays fine. Nothing very noticable anyway.
Been using it for 1 year now

A resounding YES. right now a hairline crack. I've had that before and replaced the ferrule. If you keep playing with it it starts off as if it appears to be only a scratch until the scratch started to get bigger and bigger and bigger...:-(

It's all good now.
After inspection, Predator agrees to replace the 314-2 with the new Vantage shaft!

Finally...

Got the shaft in hand and gave it a few hits.
Still adjusting to the deflection though.
