Cracked Ivory Joint And Collars

Got any questions ???????

Hey guys,I have a cue from a leading cue maker. It has a piloted ivory joint.I unscrewed the cue yesterday and looked at the collar on the shaft and noticed a hair line(thinner than that)mark on the collar running thru the ringwork. At first I thought it was from the corner of the table or the Brunswick badges on the head side or score markers.I went to bed.Woke up today and got my trusty pocket microscope on it.It appears the same line runs thru the joint, and the collar and ringwork on the forearm side of the joint.Looks like a CRACK.all 3,shaft,joint,collar on forearm are pretty lined up.Questions 1 Is this something a cuemaker has a warranty on?2 Can the collars and ringwork be matched?3 Does this happen often?4If so,should the construction be changed to sleeved?5 Do I shoot to hard?I thought some makers do piloted ivory on break cues?I dont shoot THAT hard.6 I do not believe the cue maker is at faul?.But I am not a cue maker.I have read on AZ that this happens sometimes. One of the reasons why I aqiured this cue is because of the popularity of this type of joint.Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

Respectfully, I think only the Cue maker of that Cue can answer you honestly seeing he knows what his personal policies are.

..

1.whos the cue maker
(which will often depend if they will stand behind it or not)

2.often there is no warranty, but a call to the maker may have them fix it/or fix it at reduced price...its probally been along time since cue was made

3.this happens, dont wanna say often but it happens.its ivory which has many veins that run through it and is strong but fragile as well.animals that have these use them as defense in the wild but in the wild you do see some broken

4.good luck and i would never break with an ivory jointed cue and ivory ferrules, reason why i have a jump break.i know u can and i know i have but now adays the risk is too great get a jump/break and dont break with a cue designed like this just my opinion

It kinda sounds to me like it's more of a scratch than a crack. If I'm reading correctly, the line extends across the shaft collar, across the Ivory joint and then into the collar behind the Ivory joint. It's hard to tell without seeing the cue, but if it's just a scratch, it's possible that it could be wet sanded and buffed out. if it's too deep to sand out, The finish could be touched up easy enough. If it's cracked, I'd send it back to the maker. He'd know best how to fix it.

I have to agree with you. That is the first thing that came to my mind when he first posted but I didn't feel like typing a reply. Cracks in ivory don't just continue into other areas unless the shaft or prong itself is what cracked causing the ivory and rings to do likewise.

Crack

Ill tell ya guys, sure looks like a scratch to me.I had a viking years ago.1988.That cue had a cracked collar on the shaft. No mistaking it.When you broke the cue apart and looked where the shaft mates the forearm, you could see it clear thru the collar.I inspected the ivory joint, and the shaft collar as best with naked eye.It is NOT all the way thru the joint or the c ollar.Tommorow I will search for a magnifing glass, loop, whatever, and inspect better.I will post my findings.I want to include that I respectfully did not include the cuemakers name in the thread.I never intended to bash a,the cuemaker.I just want to educate myself in my findings and the good folks here at AZ land. What a great place.Anyone else have 2 cents, please chime in.
Thanks in advance

Hard to comment without seeing a picture. I've never seen a joint cracked like you described.

Nice to have a comment on my Avatar. Most have told me to change it.For now,I will leave it at that.I am a plumber.I have more shit stories than Carter and liver pills.I am playing with the cue as we speak.I think I will put it up and wait to hear from the maker. The cue just plays so good.Like extension of my right arm good.Ive got cues. This one plays exceptional.Thats why I have such concern for the outcome. Thanks guys for the responses.Anyone else with a word, chime in.I would post pics, they will not show up.Maybe with a NASA lens.
Thanks again guys.

You seem very proud of your avatar. Well, IMHO, this is a cuemaker's forum and not a plumber's forum. If you want a serious answer to your questions, then listen to the feedback and erase or change your avatar to something more serious for the audience from whom you are asking help.

Joint

Yes Sir,I must agree. The fact that the experienced cue guys are taking the time to respond is what this site is about.I will try to pic the joint tommorow. It is very hard to see the infraction unless the light hits it just right in the line.I will attempt to get as much light as I can on the line.I have the gut feeling that if I keep playing with it that it will get worse. As I said before, you can see the line thru the collar on the shaft, thru the ivory joint, and the collar on the forearm. It is black fonolic i geuss with silver ring, pink ivory, silver ring, black phenolic.Line goes thru black phenolic, silver ring,Not thru the pink ivory, thru silver ring, thru black phenolic?I do not know fellas.Pics tommorow. Thanks to all for taking the time.

joint

Hey Guys,Just to update. This morning I tried to get pics. They will not show the imperfection.I looked at the mating suface on the collar,as well as the ivory joint under good light.I see nothing.it only appears to be on the surface.I checked my cases to see if something could have caused it,nothing. Then I grabed my microfiber towel to wipe off the cue before I put it away, and it hit me.As I play,I wipe down the cue once in a while.Remove the skin oil from hands.I would bet that there was a piece of debris on the microfiber cloth and I ran it right across the joint.I will play with the cue and monitor the imperfection. Thanks to all who reply.

I've cracked a joint before and let me tell you if it was cracked you would know it. Biggest problem you will have is the excuse for any problem in your game cause you think your cue is not 100%. For that reason alone I would send it off to the cue maker and have him tell you it's all good. Hope it works out for you.

joint

Much appreciated.I think you are correct. The first day I noticed it was terrible.I have other cues. Not like this one though. It is a nasty feeling to know your stuff is broke.
