I have heard the round mast mills are not any good, but for $700 I couldn't pass it up. What do you-all think?

Glad you got it set up Larry. Now....let's see that thing in action!!

Without you here to help reassemble, it took afew days. Speaking of seeing in action, Where are the photos of you new lathe "in action"?

Thanks John for the help on getting it loaded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like mine. You just have to plan a bit and be careful when you set the head height, and tighten things down well. $700 is a reasonable deal assuming it came with at least that vice. BTW, that vice is HUGE ( 8" ?) and you may like a smaller one better, if you plan to mill metal thingys (smaller metal thingys that is).

I think that I would have to disagree with whoever told you that 'round mast/column' mills are 'not any good'. That may be a concern on a BridgePort type/size mill, but this is considered a bench-top and I believe the column is 4.25" in dia and about 3/16" wall thickness. That's pretty damn stout.

As far as the deal you got, the drill chuck, vise and stand are easily $300.
So you actually paid about $400 for the mill.
In the words of Lilith Crane : "What do you think?"

I bought a used one very similar to it at a yard sale. It is okay. Not as nice as other mills but it does a decent job. For points it is more than enough. For metal it has a little more vibration than I like. But for proto typing it gets the job done.

I have 2 of them. For cues they are fine. For light machining on metal they will get the job done.

Thanks Dave, It's a 6" vice and it's indexed 360 degrees. Now with alittle thought I should be able to make a index wheel for my lathe.

KJ your advice on a Grizzly mill and the fact that a mill like this is on the back cover of Chris Hightowers' book. Were my deciding factors.

SK, if it is ment to be you will get one. This one must have been ment for me. Long story. Stop by on you next trip to Dallas and I will tell you about it.

Now I just need a index fixture, tailstock, shell cutter, abor something to mount all this to. Dog gone this is getting expensive. All I wanted to do was make one cue. Cause I was to cheap to pay someone to make me a 61" cue. When will it end?

Thanks for the comments. That was what I was hoping to hear!

Pete Tonkin can sell you the whole setup ready to go, but it'll cost you more than you spent on that mill . . .

Thanks but you don't understand how realy cheap I am. I will spend days trying to make stuff just so I won't have to buy it. One off the reasons for buying a mill is so I can make stuff and not pay to get it done. Lucky for me this is just a hobby.
