CSI Last Night - Pool Player

I don't know if anybody caught it, but last night on CSI the victim was a pool player who hustled somebody out of 10 grand. Of course in the flashback, the guy was making trick shots etc...to win.

I thought it was great because there was pool, dumbed down for John Q, but still pool. The ONLY beef I had with it was that one of the clues that made them think he was a pool player was a callous between his thumb and first finger....

I don't know about you, but I've played a LOT of pool, for hours and hours on end, for years. I've been in action for 15+ hours straight. I've NEVER had a callous on my hand from the cuestick. Anybody out there ever gotten one? How rough would the cue have to be to cause this?

Cheers,
RC

I don't have a callous from my cue but, I do have a callous on my middle finger from where my index finger presses against it, I use mostly a very firm closed bridge.

Never got a callous but i would say that a better clue woud have been something like bluing of the hands or chalk under the finger nails. maybe a weird residue on the hands that turned out to be slipstick or excessive powder.

I get a callous on the top of my middle finger aswell....

They used the blue chalk dust on the pants zipper in a different episode.

two more references to pool on TV and both potray the "hustle"

yeah its always some shady guy that plays pool and runs rack after rack of 9 ball doing nothing but trick shots and a big a$$ masee for the 9 ball or something just so realistic. I know thats how I run em, everyone does, right?

i get a callous on the tip of my middle finger from sliding it on the table after the good 8 hour friday night

Same here I get one on the side of my index and my middle finger from Closed and open bridges. I thought I was the only one. Man it gets to be a pain in the ass when it gets all dried out and cracks and stuff.

The had some blue chalk dust in this one too, could have been the same episode in a repeat. The callous wasn't the only evidence, but it was part of it.

Inside of my middle finger...Index finger callous would be from an open Bridge...Maybe CSI should have added it up guy was on the lemon...Not that would have been some detective work:D

This is the reason I stopped watching CSI. They use junk science and mislead viewers into thinking this must be how they really solve crimes.

It looked to me like the callous was on the flap of skin between the thumb and forefinger. Maybe if you used a slipstroke with your hand completely pronated so that the cue rested on this area and then had the grip covered with 220 grit sandpaper, you might get a callous there. Maybe it was on his bridge hand, though and using a rough shaft with a very open bridge he got a callous there. I was just thinking how quickly a wooden shovel or pick handle can cause a blister/callous. How come we don't get callouses on our bridge hand where the cue slides across it?
Even though I watch all of the CSI shows religiously, it does irk me sometimes that they think we are so stupid as to believe some of the stuff they come up with. Stuff like getting DNA results within minutes of submitting the sample and being able to read license plate numbers off of a pixellated image from a security camera are just too hokey. I saw one once where they got an image good enough to identify a person from a security camera catching the reflection in a window on one hotel of a room in a different hotel a Las Vegas block away or more.

LOL BBBAAAAAHHHHH!!!! JUNK!! Now if they would of said he got that from a slip stroke on CSI , THEN I would be impressed!!

lol... I cant believe you are complaining about the tech used when comparing it to reality, how about this:

*WHY ON EARTH* are crime scene investigators interviewing people, solving crimes and capturing bad guys?

I mean no offense, but these guys are techs that come in after the cops and just take samples and whatnot.... afaik they do not interview anyone or actually work towards solving the case or any of that.

It would be like a "Nurse" Show where the nurses are doing open heart surgery or brain surgery or diagnosing people....... that just isnt their job.

CSI has always just seemed silly to me in that respect, not even delving into the whole tech aspect.

I saw bits of it. I thought that when they showed the balls and pockets that it was English table. Was I nutz?

Also, on CSI Miami, someone wacked a guy with pool stick. How did Horatio (David Caruso) know? Because the stick left marks or shards that had muliple layers of wood. And that CSI like every CSI would obviously know that that multiple layers of wood must be a flat-laminated pool stick.

SIMILAR BUT DIFFERENT-BLISTER

After losing again in a recent tournament match I "dealt" with the frustration by firing at a couple of balls on the table hoping? to bounce them off the cushion and off the table. Well I showed those uncooperative OB's a thing or two. I was doing this with a tight closed bridge. I ended up with a nice blister on my bridge hand thumb along the inside near the nail where the shaft slides. Couldnt play again for 4-5 days until the blister went away.

I guess cue speed and tight bridge = friction = heat = blister.

Not just stupid - dumb. Reminds me of when i hit a cupboard door instead of somebody and sported a cast for 6 weeks. There's no cure for stupid-I'm doomed.

When I used to have the chance to play a lot, I used to get a callous on my middle finger from where my bridge hand rubbed the cloth. I had this for several years until work started getting in the way of my playing time. Another problem that I had was that I continually had blue chalk under one one of my fingernails from my bridge hand. Work has solved that problem as well...lol

Got one on the inside edge of my thumb. Rough? Not necessary, just a normal stack leather grip. Time will do it. Guess I'm not "gripping" the cue, huh?:D "Do they call that a slip stroke, bub?"
