OK. Pool players have always wanted a chance to 'shoot for the stars'. Well at least some of them have.

Mark Griffin and his Cue Sports International "National Championship Series" has presented the opportunity and it is now up to the players to take advantage of this wonderful chance at playing for a chance to be entered into the 'World 8 Ball Championship'

64 players in a 3 day event in Las Vegas on 9 foot Diamond tables will decide which one will be the winner of the USA representative for the World championship.

Our qualifying tournament will be held this weekend Jan 17th and 18th. Two players will have their entry fee be paid by Hard Times in Sacramento to attend the USA Championship event in Vegas.

This is an exceptional chance for the Local players to at the very least partake in this opportunity.

Expectations are high and there is excitement.
Please take a minute to thank Mark Griffin for his and his Manager Holly Ryan for all their hard work scheduling these qualifiers and also the Main event in Vegas.

Thanks Mark and Holly.

Please leave a Thank You to Mark and Holly

Bump to front page,

Please leave a thank you to Mark and Holly

Thanks....and a word about local promoting and it's effects

Dear Tom,

Thank you and everyone at Hard Time Billiards in Sacramento for your time and support. Like all major endeavors in the pool industry such as The National Championship Series (NCS), it takes alot of teamwork. Our goal is 64 players at the NCS 8-Ball Championship Feb. 13-15 at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas. We have 31 so far and working hard this month to qualifier the other 33. The NCS relies on the pool rooms for their support and proactivity.

On the national level, we at CSI promote and work to reach out to the pool playing community about the NCS. We have set up a program to encourage the local pool rooms to join us as qualifier hosts to encourage participation on the local level. The players pay a lower entry fee via the qualifier system and still offer the opportunity for players in their areas to qualify to play at the national and potentially at the world level. The other option would have been to have the first 64 players to pay a $500 entry plus expenses - thus no play on the local level supporting the local pool rooms or offering more people the chance to go to NCS national events. Although in many regards the second option may have been administratively easier, it was not in the best interest of the players around the country or the sport to necessarily take the easier road.

There have been numerous qualifiers that have been successful, Casper Billiards in San Leon, TX; Golden Fleece in Kenmore, WA; Comet Billiards in Parsippany, NJ; Rack 'Em Billiards in Aurora, CO; and Pool Sharks and Mickey's Las Vegas, NV just to name a few. It takes promoting at the local level in addition to what we do out of the CSI national office to make the quallifiers locally successful. Pool room owners, when they are really active in promoting the qualifier, the players have been coming in numbers such as: 27, 39, 104, 62. The rooms that have had high numbers have been very responsive and pro-active promoting their NCS qualifier, their room, made sure all the staff was knowledgable about the qualifier so they could talk it up, spoke with players who stopped by and some have even taken out local ads or themselves gotten on the forums to promote their qualifier.

Tom, Thanks again for everything and I hope to still come out there next weekend, I heard your turnout Jan. 17-18 is expected to be good and that will be very much due to you and the staff at Hard Times.

Thanks,

Holly

What is the entry fee to the championship? I just checked the NCS website and didn't see it listed anywhere. Thanks.

it says here;

In order to qualify to play at the national level, players must compete in a sanctioned qualifier event and either be a U.S. citizen or eligible to hold a U.S. Passport (a requirement to represent the U.S. in WPA world championships). From November 2008 through January 2009 pool rooms across the U.S. will host qualifiers where (2) paid entries to the NCS 8-Ball National Champion will be allotted to the top finishers. Call each host room for questions and start times for their respective events.

64 players x $500 = $32,000.00

Mark G. has surrounded himself with a group of talented and dedicated pool enthusiasts and it shows that every project of CSI is labor of love for the game. It's easy to punch in and punch out but unfortunately, team CSI work diligently 24/7 and even on holidays. They receive and return calls from office and from home. I'm sure Bill Stock gets tired of people calling 1:30 a.m. from a loud western bar to ask if this or that scenario is a legal hit :) - for several years :) - probably same people who can't remember the rules because they are once again drunk, lol.

Thanks, Tom for starting this thread to show appreciation. Even if they are doing what they love to do, it's nice to know it is appreciated.

Thanks for all the pool rooms support as well.

S.

Hats off to Mark and his tireless staff for seeing that the NCS is as successfull as possible. After taking a bath at the Qlympics Mark has shown the pool world what he is made of by coming right back and creating and implementing this great format. NCS was created for the players to have opportunity to become a bonified national champion and possibly world champion, all players should recognize this huge effort and do whatever they can to support it now and in the future.
