CTE & Aiming

Ok, so, someone (an instructor) explain to me what CTE is with regards to aiming? Assuming that's Center-To-Edge? Scott mentioned it in my other thread so I thought I would bring it up.

And a couple of things right off the bat here:
1) ENGLISH! is banned so I don't have Rick to explain things to me. Thus I had to start a thread.
2) I searched on CTE and, believe it or not, it came up with zero results.

I'm with you on some of the aiming systems, like SEE, Edge to Edge, and ball fractions. I'm more used to Ghost ball, and contact point aiming. It would be great to spend so time with an Instructor.

There is an aiming subforum: http://forums.azbilliards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=95

You got no search results because the search on AZB does not permit 3-letter search terms.

ENGLISH!, so far as I know, was rabidly anti-CTE, but I could be wrong. I never go into the aiming subforum. Lots of anger and ignorance there.

I recommend the video series "How to Aim Pool Shots" for obvious reasons, if you have trouble with your aiming. There is also lots of info on many aiming systems/methods for free here: http://billiards.colostate.edu/threads/aiming.html.

1. English knew zero about CTE.
2. You didn't find anything because you can't search a phrase like "CTE" You really need to just visit the aiming forum or buy the DVD.


In a nutshell, CTE is aiming by using the center and edge of the CB to line up with specific aim points on the OB. This in conjunction with a manual pivot to center ball (or visual sweep in Pro One) will lead you to the shotline with a slight over cut. There are those (including myself) that believe a certain amount of the subconscious takes over during the process at some point or another.

I used the system for a while, but eventually went back to using single line mixed with contact point-to-contact point. Personal preference for me, but I know there are still people here that are using CTE.

However, if I were you, I would stay away. The path to learning CTE takes time and effort, and at times can be full of frustration. Based on your past posts, you don't strike me as an individual that can tough it out.
 
Just saw Scott Lee's post you were talking about.

He's not talking about CTE (the system), but CTE (center to edge) for aiming a 1/2 ball cut.

It's just an old method for aiming 1/2 ball shots. You aim your tip through center of the CB and line up to the edge of the OB.

i want to emphasize the distinction made above by beiberLvr
CTE the system generates ALOT of discussion and is completely different and more complex
than CTE the method to aim a half ball hit

Which is why I never, ever say "aim CTE" when I mean to aim for a half-ball hit. I say, "Aim for a half-ball hit." Much of teaching is avoiding words and nomenclature that have a chance to cause confusion. For the same reason I almost never use the term "english". "Side spin" is less ambiguous.
 
There are more than one CTE aiming methods. Stan's is CTE Pro One. Ours is CTE/SAM, and does not require a pivot the way I teach it. The half ball aim (30 degree cut) is the most common shot on the pool table for cuts or banks.

In the meantime I have always used the RAT method. Nick Varner told me that was a good system, a good method to use.
