Cue butt diameter older cues vs. new

Production cues today are often in the 1.240" - 1.250" range, some like Viking and Meucci are larger in diameter. Cuetec cues have always been super skinny, not long ago they used to have that .791" joint diameter. New Cuetec's at least have a .840" joint diameter.

Apparently I'm nuts. Micrometer them both today and they're almost identical. If anything the Cuetec is .001 larger. LOL For whatever reason the Falcon just feels better to me.

Maybe I prefer a smaller diameter butt instead. Just because I'm the only one here that knows how to party on a Saturday night here's the dimensions of all the cues I have on hand.

Damn...you only have 5 cues on hand???

Better get busy and add to the pool economy! 😄

Some Viking cues are NOt larger in diameter. Its cues are also available in a skinny option of 1.205 (30.6mm) diameter:

See https://www.vikingcue.com/customized-materials/#skinny . From that link:

The "SKINNY" option on a Viking cue butt measures out about 1.205" (30.6 mm) in diameter compared to the average standard diameter of 1.295" (33 mm). This may not seem like a big difference, but to the players that prefer the feeling of a smaller grip, the difference is HUGE!

That's true, but it's as you say a special order that costs extra. Those cues are really skinny though, I have a medium sized hand and 30.5ish mm is really skinny.

one reason they are thinner now is that many of the old custom cues used willie hoppe butts that were leather wrapped.

the butts were wide but after you took off the thick wrap you had to cut them down to wrap them with irish linen.

that was the start of thinner butts and players liked them that way. as they got used to them.

unwrapped butts had to be cut down as well to remove dents and such. so it was the start of an evolution.

My 2010 Predator is much more bell shaped and both of my newer Preds are slimmer.
1.285" vs 1.230" and 1.235" at the fattest point on each.
Butt diameters from Bobbydee, Sudocrushms, the Viking skinny, and an average Viking

Cues of the past were designed with the weight in the butt because they shot center and high English. the heavy balls and nappy cloth slower rails . As rails got faster clothe faster you could draw the rock balance points went more forward. That was explained to me by a very well known cue builder.

balance point has stayed the same. thinner butts is just an over time thing where players have favored keeping them that way.

most good players didnt like the fat brunswick butts long before most even played pool.

many old cues had an even taper from the butt down to the tip. first the bridge area got flatter. called the pro taper.

The old Hoppe cues had thick butts, butt very heavy, 20-22 oz. Back then no one knew about rubber grips.

I won't go into a detailed explanation now but, in 3C the thicker the butt the more control of the CB.

Thus, one of the reasons 3C players use roll on rubber grips, which adds little weight.

Correction to the earlier post of butt diameters. See below.
The Cue Alchemist edited his earlier diameter measurements.
The widest-diameter cue is no longer the Brunswick Master Stroke --- its WHP
The edited version:
My Brunswick Masterstroke I have, maxed out at 36.77 mm. and Bmc meucci I got is: 32.82 mm

I have a 22oz WHP with natural veneers and a Rambow ring, the butt is 37.5

The Brunswick Master Stroke is a millimeter thinner than stated in earlier post; instead of the earlier-reported 38mm, it is 36.77mm.

The Cue Alchemist’s Meucci BMC is still the same when rounded off at 33mm but it is actually 32.82mm.

So, with the new corrected numbers:

Anton's Ukrainian _________ 28.9 mm or 1.14"
Viking skinny ______________ 30.6
Newer Predator ___________ 31.2
Newer Predator ___________ 31.4
Pure X_____________________ 31.3
Cuetec _____________________31.7 or 1.25"
Falcon ______________________32.0
2010 Predator _____________32.6
Brunswick __________________32.7
Mali _______________________ 32.8
Meucci BMC _______________32.8
Viking ______________________33
Briggs (100-year old) ______35.3
Brunswick Master Stroke __36.8
WHP 22 ounce ____________37.5
