cue case building?

Nice drawing, John [JBCase]. It funny everybody ask about the tubes. But I believed nobody have ask or wonder how the rivets are installed? Machine or Hand Hammer, and which tool you use? But then again are screwback posts/ conchos [chicago screw] use?

JB CASE is there a way I can download the diagram so i can read to finer print? lol I tried to zoom but didnt work out.

Good video. If you look on youtube there are several videos that go through step by step on carving, beveling, ect. Its worth finding.
 
I posted on this a couple of weeks ago but it was deleted. Anyone ever thought of making cases from camoflauge leather? I work for a leather tannery and we have some very cool looking patterns. Seems that it might make a nice case, but might be a little too redneck for some.

Did the Cigar or Cigarette Cases come before the Cue Cases???

Thanks for being so helpful with all the information. I'm wondering if you have any recommendations on how to do this part? What type of fabric would be good - is cotton better than nylon? How about fleece? Stretchable? What properties are preferred for this liner?

But mostly, how do you know what is the right size to make the liner? I can see sewing it too small so that it doesn't fit well and the cue won't fit, and I can also seeing sewing it too large so that it doesn't fit well.

And I figure you just turn the ends and tape or super-glue the liner to the outside of the tube?

Well I figure that there are some things they really need to learn to do themselves. I mean I could write a step by step guide on how to build a cue case but where is the fun in that? I am now in my 18th year of building cue cases and I am STILL learning how to build them.

As for the rivets I built a custom rivet press with a long arm so we can rivet the whole line, 32" without stopping. Our press is manual with the different tools inserted and held with magnets for quick changing.

I also have a custom anvil type setup with four long arms each shaped a little differently that we use for various operations.

We don't machine rivet yet but I will probably purchase a machine riveter next for our mass production cases. That has to be specially built as well and can handle about 16" so you can do half the case and then need to turn it around.

I prefer synthetic/cotton blends that don't absorb and hold moisture. All cotton can wear to quickly and will hold moisture. Fleece is going to be to thick. You don't really want stretchable as you can pull it too tight and create a grabby center.

To get the right size you simply experiment on a small section of tubing. For me the right fit is when the tube slides over the cue snugly but moves freely with little effort. If you can hold the tube section and drop the cue in and it does not fall through but comes to a gentle stop near the end of the wrap then that's what I look for. Of course this may mean that you need to add some padding or an extra layer of fabric for that type of snug fit.

you basically want to be able to see clearly through the tube when it's lined. Not too tight and not to loose. Too loose and the liner can get twisted, too tight and it makes a funnel in the center and grabs the cue.

Tape the ends using packing tape. If you want to be really secure then you can use double faced tape and packing tape. There is no need to glue the ends.

You can tool any thinkness of veg tanned leather. 3/4 oz is good for case pockets, since you need to fold the leather. The bodies are a different story, as it is basically up to personal preference - I like a heavy 8-10 and use 3/4 for pockets.

I have a ton of left over tube end - ~10-12" - one of the things I was working on was cigar holders. Of even a cigar pocket on a case. I always thought that would be awesome.

I make liquor bottle holders for friends out of my small scraps. I'll have to dig up a pic of one I did - I gave one to my buddy when he got back from Iraq. He thought it was awesome, and just a case. He never realized there was a bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed inside until he opened it - then he was REALLY happy.

Brain, do a search at leatherwork.net for cigar holder or cigar case. This what you might come up with along for single cigar. This idea can be use for cue case.

John , you right ! So many question There the right way, the wrong way, then there how to fix mistake way. Not to mention the Hazard, Stain on the hand, crack fingertip skin, breathing leather dust particle, backache, and so on!

Do you use plugs in the case [between leather and tubes for tight fit]?
 
have any of you guys made the exterior of the case then squeezed the tubes in? or is that not even plausible

I have only seen one pattern for camo leather - it repeated way too much - it looked like really ugly curtains or a tie from the 70s. I planned on making a couple locally with camo leather, or possible hair-on deer hide. I traded some small leather boxes for turkey calls and such for a hair-on bear hide - but have no idea what to do with it yet.

It told a friend I would give him a case made with the bear hide just to have him walk around with it - sort of a joke, but when you walk into a pool hall with a bear hide case - it only has to make people wonder what you're up to.

This is an amazing "case" thread... thanks to the case makers contributing and sharing their knowledge! It's priceless!!!

I'm in the process of building a custom case for myself, thinking an 8x16 (6 forsale and my 2 personal cues). I've got some great ideas and a pretty good understanding of how to assemble everything. I have someone helping me with the stitching of the liners and exterior. I'll post info as it takes place.

Question: I'm looking for the swivel latches that you see on cases like the Instroke. I have a couple cases that need new latches and thought I'd try to fix myself. Any suggestions? (see photo)
