Cue condition

ways to tell ...

You can put the shaft in a lathe, and watch it turn.

You can sight it with your eyes.

You can use a laser light.

But rolling on a table is fast and pretty accurate.

Snapshot9's other replys were good, but Rolling on a FLAT Table Works. also check the Shafts on their OWN...

Depending on the taper, rolling it flat on the table is not at all a good way to do it. THe very best way is to spin it between centers on a lathe. If the cue is straight, it will look like it is not moving (ignore the blur and you will see what I mean). If there is a slight wobble, you will be able to see it clearly with the eye. You can even measure it with a dial-indicator accurate down to the thousandth and better (depending on the dial indicator). A good way to do it in the billiard room is to put the butt plate on the rubber part of the rail and the joint on the bed surface. Then roll it and you will be able to see if the cue is straight. Again, if the taper is a certain way, not all of the butt will lay flat on the table and it can be misleading.

> Deno is on the money here, using a dial indicator in a lathe is best. I must give you a word of caution though. Make SURE you wrap a short piece of Scotch tape around the cue if using an indicator, practically any indicator worth buying will have CARBIDE contact points, these can ruin your day and this cue by scratching right thru the finish and into the wood,so if you do this leave the lathe turned off and turn the cue by hand. I saw Joe Salazar once use a fresh dollar bill and ran it under the cue while rolling it on a bar table,he claimed that the slate seams on a 9 footer can make a perfect cue look warped. He set the cue down on the dollar, and drug the dollar towards the wrap, then rotated it so that the other 3 points were facing up,and repeated. He said if the dollar hangs up anywhere, there MIGHT be a warp, but could also be a thick spot in the finish or something along those lines. Tommy D.
