Are You "For" or "Against" Cue Design Theft?

I have read a few posts talking about copying a traditional design, but I think Jamie is talking about trademark design elements that identify a cue as such. Some examples below

- silver cog rings
- sugartree microrings
- barengrugge fantastic rings
- McDaniel peacock cue
- Modern Gina(about everything he designs lmao, ridiculous but true!)

These are breakthrough designs that have inspired many different spin-off designs and ideas which is great for custom cues in general. I voted against copy cats because custom cue's are called that for a reason, they are custom and unique to each cuemaker! Do you enjoy seeing Gina designs being replicated in china?

With that being said, I have no problem with a tribute as long as it is represented as that.

Well even if one on your list stole the inlay you are attributing to him? Szamboti came up with the peacock and the 8 point cue that McDaniels has tributized.

Great poll. I hope it's ok to reveal your vote because I want to explain mine. I voted "for" because I feel anyone should be permitted to have a cue they love and if they can get a Cuemaker to build it, and that man should be able to build it without fear of being flamed. Why? because there is a double standard followed on this forum - "Depends on who the Cuemaker is".
You have all probably seen the thread Vinnibabarooch has about "Cue #544". I love this beautiful cue and I said so in his thread. I'm glad he got it and I'm glad Barry made it for him the way he wanted it. That's the whole point.
However, if Jerry Rauenzahn would have made this cue (which he could), someone would have hijacked Vinnibabarooch's thread with a comment like "Nice Prewitt" (sound familiar?) and the flames would start over the rings.
I don't think anything was done wrong on cue #544 Barry did fabulous work and Vinnibabarooch got a wonderful cue. The way he wanted it.

I hope there would be a section to list out design and pictures showing which is generic, which is unique.

And maybe also pay tribute to the originators of the design and people can see and reference to.

I was getting a cue made recently and was asking the cuemaker to put in dash and dots ringwork. I send him a picture and he says, it is dash and square. "Szamboti" ringwork.

Felt a little silly for a while but hey, at least now i know what it is called. And it is actually a recognized design which people identify with the cuemaker. I suppose such recognition is due and should be made official.
 
I think ever time some Cuemaker make a 6 Point, they should list it as a Bert Schreger Inspired Cue as Burt I believe made the first Six Pointer.

How many Cues for sale are listed as a Southwest TYPE, or South West Inspired?

How many Cues are list with Buska Rings, or a Buska Type Cue.

IMHO J & J of Sante Fe Springs, CA, did a COPY of a High Dollar Gina, in a Decal Cue, and I think most buyers know they were getting a Ernie Gina.

IMHO Cue Theft Design would be like me, and the guys over a the wood Shop Cranking out a EXACT COPY of say a Barry Z, done with the Signature on the Butt Cap, and trying to pass it off as the real deal. That is something we would not do, and that is IMHO WRONG.

As far a Cuemaker "Z" copying the work or design of Cuemaker "J", "P", or "F" etc., the question would be is it a totally original design, or a bunch of element of other Cuemakers work.

As I personally can only think of 4 or 6 Cuemakers who designs, ring works or other elements of their work is unique to their individual work. JMHO.

What about pechauer's "new" jump cue disign. its identical to the disign that came out of the jacoby shop years ago.
