Cue "HIT" Question

O.K. Here's the problem....

I'm looking for a production or custom cue thats "hit" is close if not equal to a one piece house cue.

This may be the stupidest post you've ever seen but I'm tired of searching. I know for a fact that Meucci cues are NOT IT! I guess I've been trying to force myself to play with a Meucci and would never consider anything else.

BIG MISTAKE..Wasted time and money in my opinion. Anyone have any suggestions for a new cue I should be on the lookout for?

Not a rich man, so please, no $5,000, wait 10 years custom cues alright... :p

Thanks in advance.....

You know, I still think house cues hit the best--if they have a good tip and ferrule. I think it's because they are one-piece. I don't use them often, I prefer my Schon just because it's consistent.

Mizerak in one of his books talks about an old timer who carried his one-piece cue with him on the road.

Erik Hjorfelson from Canada (top player, 2nd in the Canadian 9-ball this year) actually uses a one piece house cue, carries it around in a snooker cue style case and all. If you really want the pure housecue hit find a nice one you love and buy it. The hit of a truely great housecue is almost impossible to match in a 2 piece, the reason they are never used is the fact moving them around is a bitch. You can spend a small fraction of the price of a 2 piece that may come close to matching a one piece hit by simply buying the house cue and dealing with the travel issues. This is the only answer, I dont think any 2 piece cue in the world hits like a one piece. Not to say there are not great hitting 2 piece cues, but they hit different from a one piece due to taper differences, length (one piece cues are often/usually shorter then custom cues), and the lack of a joint which may be the smallest actual factor of the bunch.

All told I actually never liked the hit of one piece cues as much as the best 2 piece cues I have hit with. BUT if I was to get a cue maker with a lathe that could actually do a 1 piece cue 59 inches long and get my taper I like and the right balance point and such I would love to get one built. Most house cues are weighted too far back for my liking and are too short and too stiff. A custom one piece to my specs with some butterfly points and reverse points to match turn of the century cues though, man I would love to get one of em.

I won't say who builds cues that hit the most like a one piece, but can give you some advice as to what it takes to make one. First I would suggest the billiard cue style joint instead of the normal pool cue joint. Get someone to take a fullsplice blank and then get a tight grained piece of shaft wood to maintain a little stiffness without having to leave the shaft too fat. The billiard cue style joint will eliminate the sounds that almost all other joints make and keep the natural wood stiffness in the middle instead of taking away from or adding to it. The screw in a billiard cue joint will either be wood, or nylon or some other type of material besides metal. Many cuemakers can build this type of cue. Check with the ICA members for quotes.

i know that richard phillippi USED TO make cues with the wooden screw ala billiard cues. one of the few(if any) cuemakers who does this.

what you want is as little metal or non-wood material as possible in your cue. do you REALLY like the hit of a house cue or do you just want the feel of a one piece. because house cues have those lousy fiber ferrules.

Try a Viking or McDermott with a 3/8-10 pin, the Dufferin Sneaky Pete is a one piece Duffering house cue but with a joint! Rumor has it that Dufferin sold it's business, anyone confirm this?

My question: If you have found a good one-piece house cue which hits great, has anyone tried to have a joint installed ? Does that change the hit ? I'd say a wood-to-wood joint can't change the hit too much... but can't tell for sure, because I've never tried. Anyone ?

The cue maker here in town will add a joint to your favorite house cue.

The old Dufferin house cues have a very strong taper. That, combined with a full splice makes the cue play very stiff and solid. Plus they are usually only 57", making them even stiffer. I assume this is what you like.

Meucci shaft wood is pretty pathetic these days. The light wood and straight taper is too soft and flexible. I ordered six shafts from Meucci in the last year and every one of them now has a slight warp.

My suggestion would be to get a sneaky pete with a flat face, wood to wood joint. Look for a used Scruggs sneaky Pete or I think Frey still makes them.

If you have more money to spend, you might also want to look into having a full splice Titlist cue converted into a playing cue and get a shaft made for it with a strong taper. Then you have both the good looks and the one-piece feel.

I think that Dufferin uses their house cue to make their Phantom sneaky pete. My Phantom has the same strong taper, and the shaft grain lines up with the forearm grain suggesting it was a one piece cue at one time. I think it's hit is very similar to my Dufferin house cues. It's definately a lot stiffer than my Falcon, which is stiffer than my McDermott. It's something that's easy to try given the Phantom is about a $60 cue !
