Just found this. I was thinking Rich, but the centered trim ring throws me off. No original shaft, it came with an old Palmer shaft. I'm pretty sure this is Brazilian, whatever it is it's pretty.
Looks to be a Rosewood, can't say what kind. If you got some close ups of the wood, someone here might be able to confirm. But, Brazilian isn't the easiest to tell apart from, say Amazon, but we will try.
Mr. Crisp might chime in, he is the Wizard.
But I would rely on more expert eyes. Many of these woods overlap in appearance and they can be very similar. In addition, there are usually at least several speacies and varieties for the common names we apply.
I see you posted in the cuemakers forum...that should get some expert eyes.
It is definitely nice wood. I hope you get it repaired and get a proper shaft made for it...out of some old house cue wood maybe....
My guess would be Brasilian Rosewood.
I have some wood sitting in my cellar with exactly that colour and burly look. Some of it even much more with burl. Bought it from a wood wholeseller. Can not be bought any more in Europe.
Coco is often more brown-red as that one tends into lilac-red. If you use a microscope, the Brazilian should have some coarse pores.
I'd be pretty confident that it's Braz rose. It looks like it anyway, but if you look closely you'll see tiny white sap specs in the grain. Those are pretty common in certain woods, and Braz rose is one of those woods. Purpleheart is another, but i'm pretty sure that's not purpleheart.
