Cue ID - Vintage Cue

I would be interested in a full report.

Full report:

For the Gus voters,

- Although your picture is taken at an angle, it looks like the points are just a bit short for Gus points, especially with rings above the wrap.

- The wrap is neither Penn, nor Cortland, and I'm not aware of any other linen wrap used by Gus. On both Penn and Cortland, there is more evenness in the green strands than what is on this cue. More resembles later Blue Mountain, used by Black, Scruggs, Mottey, Rauenzahn, and everyone else.

- The finish does not look like decades-old lacquer. That would yellow more, especially on the lighter areas of the cue.

- The bumper does not look like original Gus. Too rounded and too small a diameter. It looks exactly like an aged Richard Black bumper. Then again, in your picture, there does appear to be a little space between the delrin and the bumper. Could have been replaced at some point? I'd have to examine it to be sure. Pictures can be deceiving.

For the Horn voters,

Not the right bumper for Horn.

Could it be that you have a Gus that was restored a while ago by Richard Black, with bumper replacement? Or, a design someone wanted from Richard to do a tribute?

These "identify the cue" posts are fun, but, if you don't try, you don't win.

All the best,
WW

"I'm going to flip over all the cards." :-)

I'm not too surprised no one guessed the maker as he is know but a bit obscure. It is a cue by Mike Fedunka made with a Gus forearm and possibly a Gus made back-end.

Thanks for all of your responses.

Chopdoc said "maybe a Fedunka". I think that counts as a correct guess.

Yes I did. :D

When is the award ceremony?

EDIT: I will say that any time I think Horn I also think Fedunka...two "great imitators" IMHO.

Wow, this one was tough. I saw it as a hodge-podge of makers, and now I see it is available in the archive searches. No wonder Joe was calling in badges. :embarrassed2:

I am still wondering about the bumper and buttplate on this cue. Here's another image of a Fedunka cue, from the archives, with the usual larger bumper; doesn't resemble this one at all. Are you guys sure that Richard Black didn't have his hands on this cue at some point? Anyhow, great thread.

All the best,
WW

First of all I had no idea who the maker was which is why I didn't comment. Secondly I'd never pay $1,500 for a cue but I have to say compared to some of the inflated prices I see on the wanted/for sale forum that's a pretty solid price for a cue with a Gus forearm and a maker who didn't make a lot of cues. Gus Szamboti isn't making any more forearms and Mike Ferdunka isn't making any more cues.

Nice cue.
