Cue Joints - Pins and Threads

Okay, this is probably a dumb question. After 30+ years of playing and owning several cues, I assumed I knew the answer until recently. Now I'm not so sure and am looking for clarification.

Of the several cues I've owned, both production and custom, I've never owned one with a 3/8x10 pin joint. All have been either 5/16x14, 5/16x18, or radial, and all shafts had inserts. I've shot with one 3/8x10 cue, a McDermott, but don't care for wood threads in the shaft. I prefer an insert.

My question is, are all 3/8x10 cue shafts wood thread, or do some have inserts? I'm asking because I'm considering having a new cue built, and 3/8x10 is the preferred size. I'd prefer an insert, but it dawns on me that may not be routine (or even possible), since I can't definitively say I've ever seen one. I'd also prefer not to look like an idiot when I try to spec a cue with a 3/8x10 insert. :)

I really just have a thing against wood threads, although I suppose I could get over it.

On a similar note, since we're clarifying things, I see a lot people refer to wood threads as a "wood to wood" joint. A joint can be wood to wood (which to me refers to the joint face, not the threads) and still have an insert, so that's confusing. I get that most (all?) wood thread joints ARE wood to wood facing, but I'd think it better to distinguish whether we're talking about threads or joint faces, just to be clear.

Wood to wood is joint only and not threads. You can have a phonelic insert in the shaft for 3/8X10 screw. You are good to go.

All of my ivory joint cues are flat faced joints, use flat faced wood shafts without inserts and have either a radial pin, 3/8x10 or 3.8x11 stainless steel, brass or titanium steel pins.
The variation in pins was done by the cue-maker to control the weight of the cue butts. My cue butt weight specification was between 14.5 & 14.75 ozs (must be under 15 ozs).

Joint type

No I have never seen a 3/8x10 insert in a shaft..............
Why would you want one ?
What is wrong with them the way they are now ?

Some people like big pin cues some people don't .
Its all just a personal preference, .

I have a few nice custom cues,,,,,,, they are all 3/8x10 or 3/8x11 big pin wood to wood jointed cues.

Your welcome to drop in and try some of them to help you make up your mind.

If this is the definition of wood to wood, I don't know that I've seen anything else. I've seen a relatively soft plastic (of some kind) insert for radial pins, but don't think I seen what I think is phenolic.

3/8 x 10 Pins

A lot of custom cue makers are using a modified 3/8x10 pin now. The threads are cut differently and a normal 3/8x10 shaft will not fit it. The modified pins gives more more contact area between the shaft wood and the pin. Most of these cues tend to have a very solid hit and there is no doubt about the tightness of the joint when are putting the cue together.

A few of us have Schon's with ivory joints and 3/8 10 pins most are wood threaded in the shafts. But one friend ended up buying a shaft and having it re threaded and kept the brass insert in it. He likes the way it plays but I have not had a chance to play with it myself.

Why do you want the larger thread with an insert? The larger thread is used so that it can be used into a wood cut thread.

Meucci uses a G10 pin for weight & flex reasons but I've been told that it 'eats' into the wood threads so care needs to be taken when screwing & unscrewing.

I just don't understand your reasoning & would like to know what that is so that I might learn something.

Thanks in advance,
Rick

Mess wx700 has an insert in their 3/8 10 pin

There in PI or here in the states ?

From my understanding the modified pin is mainly a china made pin and taps...

I am all against tons of weird pins.......................

3/8-10 W/ Insert

I believe the TNT Breaker I recently sold had the 3/8-10 (G10) with a red plastic Insert in the shaft.

Where have you been ? Nevada ?
Flat bottom 3/8 10 with .308 minor is one of the most popular joint screws today .
Made in the US .
You can use inserts for them .
I've used inserts on 3/8 11 ( kevlar and phenolic ) at times .
