Is there any players here who shoot with a non standard cue length that is anything other than the 58" standard? If so, what is your reasons. Any opinions on the subject would be appreciated thanks.

I use a 57 inch cue because, although I'm an adult, I'm a little on the short side and my arms aren't that long.

Earl Strickland plays with a 54" cue. He cut off 4 inches off the butt of his cuetec and it weights 16oz. He states that he has more cueball control. Also Pat Flemming plays with a short cue as well and both are almost 6' tall. Shawn Putman of Ohio plays with a 60" cue and he is about 6'3" tall. Even though 58" is the standard industry length when you play alot of pool you start to experiment with different equipment (long/short cues, the bridge glove, wraps, tips etc...) to really fine tune your game. Also, Nick Varner plays with a 57" cue as well. I used to play with a 1985 Joss cue that was 59" in length and each half had a 1/2 inch added to it I had no longer shaft as seen on most 59" cues. Check out Strickland on accustats or on espn with that short cue.

I play with a 60" cue and wear a 35" shirt sleeve. With a standard length cue, my right hand is too far back and I can't feel the balance of the cue as well, so I got a cue that puts my hand on the wrap.

I play with a 60in cue because my bridge arm is really extended to it's length and my hand grips exactly where the wrap is. I do make 'em 58, 59 or 60 if the player wants it with shafts and butt of equal length

I'm 6'5" and I play with a standard length 58" cue. I grip the cue in the butt sleeve and I've considered changing to a longer cue, but I'm not sure which way to go. Right now I can't invest any money in custom cue and production cues are hardly ever made longer than the standard. Now, I play with a Bear cue...

Also, I've seen a longer quality shaft warp in no time, so I'm still hesitating over getting a longer cue.

You can probably get yourself a better set-up without big major expense.

The big problem I found with some longer cues is the longer shafts tend to be too flexible (for me). I now play with a 30" Predator shaft on a 30" Josswest cue and found it is just the ticket. The Predator shafts would play well on any cue - but you have to get used to it. The good thing is that they are plenty stiff. I would recommend a longer cue -at least 60 inches for you - if it's stiff enough. Predators can be ordered in 30" for most joints.

If you don't like the feel of Predator shafts, the Tiger X plays like a standard shaft (they're laminated) it's plenty stiff and they stock them in 30" ready to go (Tiger Products, Burbank). They're about $150.

You could get these shafts made up for your Bear cue, then when you get ahead a few bucks, if you like the shaft, you could have a longer Barringer 4 prong blank made up to your specs to fit the shaft. The blank and labor would probably run $200.

I shoot with a 59" Zylr and I really like it. The butt and shaft are each 29.5" and the shafts are the straightest I have ever seen. Nice and stiff, hardly any flex. Really sweet cue. It really surprised me how much only an extra inch helped out with stretching for a long shot. Excellent balance as well. I am generally gripping the middle to back of the wrap. I reccomend his cues to anyone who has a chance to buy one. I think they all come 59" standard, unless requested otherwise.
Peace

The cue should be tapered in proportion to it's length and balanced properly. That way, you won't even notice you.r playing with a much longer cue. PM me if you want a custom hard hitting plane jane. I got shafts up to 31" or a 60-62" cue ready to be made. Any choice woods let me know I have a wide variety in stock.

i used to use a 61" perry weston. butt was 32" shaft was 29". i kept the shafts at 29" to keep stablity in them. i am 6'3" and my arm span is 6'5". i loved that cue, it fit me very well. i am now playing with 58" cues, it is easier to find cases for them..LOL. i had to have Joe Porper make a special case for my cue. my break cue was a 60" hearn, 31" butt and 29" shafts. having a cue that allows you to use your full stroke can really make a difference in your game. i would try to find some people with longer cues and ask if you can hit a few balls with them and see what you think. i do recommend a longer cue for taller people.

Interesting - Nova's used to come standard at 59" also. This should probably be the standard length. With so many players using 10" - 12" bridges, the cues are shrinking!

I'm glad you like your Zylr. I've heard good things about them.

Chris

Just passing a note, Z's come standard at 58".
59' and 60's are special order and are done equal length butt and shafts.

I bought a 30 inch shaft for a 29 inch butt. After playing for years with a 29 inch shaft, I found I was bumping into the cueball accidentally when I used the longer shaft. Then I bought a 59 inch cue with 1/2 inch added to both the butt and shaft. It feels more natural that way, and plays well. I decided to play with a longer cue, because I found that I was often gripping my 58 inch cue below the wrap. But I didn't want to go TOO long, since I didn't want to seriously affect the way the cue handled.

Just my opinion. By the way, I'm 6'2" with a 6'2" wingspan.

cheers,
jeremy
