Cue-ralysis Paralysis

For those of you, well guessing that means 99 perent of us here that has more than one cue, do you get paranoid that one cue is better at one aspect of the game vs another? say pocketing vs moving the ball around with english? Since 2008, I only had one 19.51 oz main playing cue with a regular shaft, then fast forward to 2023, I got 3 more cues, one is 19.38 oz cue with a Vantage with a 12.9 tip which is the one which is more "forgiving" at pocketing, another cue, 19.37 oz with a 314-1 shaft with a 12.5 mm tip, that is just a lot easier to move the ball around with english, another cue, 18.7oz with a Vantage shaft with a 12.9 tip that just does not feel right :)

I have churned through quite a few production cues. I have my main player and get others out few times a week if I got time. To be honest the biggest difference I notice is tips. Also CF sucks. Just sayin wood is the way.

I have run through a few cues. Mike Erwin 13mm tip with Elkmaster. Predator butt with 314-2. Joss with 314-3. Meucci with Pro shaft 12.5 mm. Schmelke with 13mm and Ultraskin. I currently have two cues. Joss with a 12 mm shaft and Triangle tip and 12.75 mm shaft with Joss brand single layer and a Players sneaky pete with 12.75 shaft and Elkmaster tip. I always think that one cue is better than the other because of a name, or a shaft or balance. I tried a Revo. It does what it does as advertised but I can execute all the shots just the same with a 13mm maple shaft so I returned it as I couldn't justify the cost vs benefit.
Ironically I feel I play the best with the $120 Players with an Elkmaster. But the truth is you can play equally well with all of them. You might not like the feel of one over the other whether it's balance, weight, tip, etc etc. But objectively you can play the same. The most important thing is do you like it and does it feel good in your hand. Everything else is in your head and in your arm. I agree with Nyquil, a tip change can make all the difference in the world. God bless Elkmaster.

The Vantage shaft IMHO is a bit of a dud, it's too dead feeling and as you found out it's easier to move the cueball with the 314.

You are correct that many shafts and cues you do not own you may like better. It's simply a fact of there being more than one thing out there and there is a good chance that even if there were only two of something on the planet, if you only tried one that you may like the other one better. I know players that refuse to try anything else because "I may like it better and then I would want to swap".

I have played with many dozens of shafts, and currently own about a dozen, I am 100% certain than if I try 10 or 20 or 300 more that I will find a handful I like better than anything I own now. But at some point it just gets silly to keep swapping equipment every week, so I stick with what I got.

All my cues are created equal. I suck a big yang with any of them. Therefor I do not get paranoid. And just because I’m not paranoid doesn’t mean I don’t worry about them or someone is not after me.
Yep. I'm equally terrible with all of my cues. As a matter of fact, I'd say that my cues have more ability than I do.
😉

I find I play better, as in better cue ball control, when I use a lighter cue on a faster table, and a heavier one on a slower table. Other then that, not much difference on imparted spin.

I usually have quite a few custom cues in my rotation. I change them with whatever feels good at the time.

I am equally as good or bad with any of them 😂

Self sharking? I try to avoid it. It's like asking someone if they breath in or breath out when stroking the ball. Nobody needs to think about that kind of head chatter in competition. Pool is 90% mental. If you're missing a shot, not moving the ball, etc it's not the cue.

If you're having these thoughts, make sure they are in practice and that you get the issue sorted before competition. I'd say it's best to not even consider such questions as long as your cue is in good condition.

Words of wisdom right there.

since i use the same shaft on all my cues (revo now was ob 1then 1 +)
the cues play very close to each other
p.s.
the shaft and tip contribute way more to how a cue plays than the butt

All my Playing cues are from the same builder. So maybe not the experience you're looking for.

I change cues every year or 5, depending on my mood.

Think I'm on year 3 swinging my 15oz Dieckman.

Good thread. Now I understand why my 1p is funky. Must be the cue.

I have a friend that has 2 identical shafts with different hardness tips {medium for 9-ball, hard for 8-ball}

Sometimes it takes him a few strokes to figure out he has the wrong shaft on the Butt.

I have Judd JT-1 with a 314-1 that plays very well, the same shaft partnered with a different butt that is 0.6 oz lighter does not feel right
