I have a very old collectable cue with an Ivory joint and birds eye maple forearm. The cue plays great and is old school splice. The metal pin inside the forearm appears to be rattling inside the cue. The cue in value is worth "ALOT!" So, I want to know if this problem has been encountered before and how it was dealt with??

I was thinking its time for a refinish and maybe a leather wrap! But, it has that Courtland green speckled wrap on it that is priceless now! So, I have quite a delimma. Keep it as it is and look at it only! or have it taken apart and reassembled and stablized. If reassembled there goes the wrap? I was not sure if the irish linen could be saved or not?

I was curious if the rattle of the weight pin in the forearm can be fixed and the wood stablized. The old sticks expecially curly maple tend to move and destablize. Please help!!! Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

I have even thought about taking pictures of the cue before the work is done to document its prominance and authenticity because I keep hearing refinishing deminishes the value? It would be worth fixing to me as I like to play with my cues not just look at them.

I have three local cue makers that could do the work. Tim scruggs, bob fry & Tony (black Boar). The cue is an old JOSS and I am leaning toward timmy because he worked for JOSS back then and its probably his work any way. Any thoughts would be greatly apperciated. Thanks!

Joss West or regular Joss?
I believe the regular Joss has a finger joint . So , it might not have any metal studs in the middle of the butt.
It might be the joint pin or the weight bolt.

Yeah, I guess It's obvious, but the first thing I would suggest when some mentioned a rattle is to check the weight bolt. I carry a couple of screwdrivers, and t-handled allen wrenches in My cue case, because I always have someone come up to me and ask if I can fix it. Quite often that's all the problem is, so I tighten it, and show them how to do it theirself in case It works loose again at the same time. If you hear a clicking or It seems to be in the joint then the shaft insert or pin may be the problem. It should be obvious to you If It were in the ferrule, so I suspect that It's not where your problem lies.
If it's more then that, then I would suggest someone that's very experienced with that make cue, one that is an expert in how they are put together, and ask him for suggestions. He may already know where the problem lies from past experience with simular makes.
As far value, well I'm not sure, but possible that It's worth more kept original, so you may have to make a tuff desision between collectable and a player cue in the end.

Not the older ones. Dan Janes and Tim are a good place to start or at least point you in the right direction to hold up the integrity of the cue, I'm not sure if Blackboar works on other cues or not.

If the cue is colectable and has a high value then I would leave it alone.
There are too many other cues available that you can play with rather than destroy the value of your collectable cue.

Hi Thanks for the info on the finger joint. THe finger joint glue may be loose causing a slight rattle.

I see from several responses that I should leave it alone and get another stick to play with. I can play with it still! it is just ""ANNOYING"".

Thank you to all that responded. It is much appreciated. Thanks!

joss rattle

i got a joss from a local pawn shop a while back. it has a loud noise when you shot! the weight bolt was loose. fixed it with a long allen wrench. i have another joss, full splice, ivory joint, no logo, 4 pointer that also has penn or cortland wrap. i am going to get the ivory joint replaced soon but will try to keep everything else as original as possible. i like the finish and the wrap as it is. yellowed finish/aging scars are cool with me. i can get it refinished anytime but i can never get it put back to original.
