Cue tips regarding deflection

Today, there are all sorts of cue tips. My question is do varies cue tips affect a cue shafts deflection? I have been using a Kumui clear medium on a Tascarella 20 oz cue! It’s a stiff shaft and firm hit. Recently, a team mate in my league went to a Kumui soft! I tried it and ugh! Way too soft for me. So soft it would appear that over time it could cause deflection versus a hard tip like a Le Pro. It changed the entire feel of the cue. Almost to the point that his heavy stiff shaft at 4.4 oz was offset by the soft tip. My point is do soft layered tips compromise a great shaft that has very low deflection? All input appreciated!!

A hard tip will cause more deflection in my experience.
A flat tip will cause more deflection also...IMO
A soft tip will cause less deflection...IMO

does it matter? adjust to what you have. every tip plays different ... not every shaft plays the same. Take what you have and adjust ... and kick everyones a$$ :)
True. I’ve used the same cue and tips for the last 14 years. It seems some players use a different cue very two years and then on top of this change cue tips types when installing a new one. Then they wonder why they can’t make simple shots consistently.

When asking about a type of cue or tip the best response is to have ‘no experience and a blank stare’. ‘Is this a good cue?’…no idea as I have only used 3 cues after 53 years of playing’.

I'm trusting Dr. Dave and my own experiences on this matter; there are no significant differences in deflection between tips.

I have two z3 shafts that had the same tips on them. Deflected the same. Changed one to very soft layered the other to compressed LePro (hard). They still deflect the same. One of these shafts were slightly damaged at one point and therefore I try to use the other for tournaments. When I had the same tips on both I'd frequently use the wrong one (that's how similar their characteristics were). It was a perfect testing ground for the theory. I belive people use various amounts of body english, bhe and other methods to compensate for deflection, and they get confused. I paralell cue every shot. It's a lot easier to track deflection differences then.

dr dave says this
"Tip hardness (in a typical range) has no practical effect on CB deflection (squirt), per the info below."
if you want to learn about "per the info below."
go to his site and learn
I seem to recall Dr Dave saying a hard tip is denser so it has more mass. And therefore could cause slightly more deflection then a soft tip on the same shaft. I would think the difference would be negligible.

Found it.....

"Tip hardness can also have an effect on effective endmass because a harder tip will have a slightly shorter contact time. Because the transverse (or lateral or shear) elastic wave won’t travel down the shaft as far during contact with a harder tip, the effective endmass and squirt can be less. However, a harder tip can also be denser and heavier, which would increase effective endmass and squirt."

What's body english?

What's that?

Body english is moving some part of your body, other than the cueing arm during the shot. A LOT of people move their bridgehand (especially) during their shots. Even very good players. I have purposefully eliminated this particular thing from my game.

Paralell cueing is not using BHE or other tilting of the cue. I have a system for knowing how much to compensate before I go down over the shot. So I don't have to tilt, shift or do anything else with the cue. The center ball line is only imagined when I figure out the aim and never is my cue actually on that line. Lets say a shot takes a quarter ball hit to pocket it using center ball at firm speed. I'm using outside english at a firm speed. Then I might aim it thinner at lets say 1/8th, because I know the deflection will push the ball to hit thicker in that particular instance. I then go down straight to the line (but with english of course) and shoot the shot. My cue with english is then exactly paralell to the line that is formed when the cue is aimed at center ball to cause a 1/8th ball hit. Naturally the compensation varies with every shot, but with experience it's not so difficult to figure out a very good estimation for most shots.

Yes, even moving the cueing arm differently, such as with "swooping" english.

Sounds like the way I do it, and I suppose lots of others too, except I've just learned to recognize the right angles from experience. Care to share your system?

its like stock trading ..... everyone looking for that magic thing that dont exist. you spend time with what you have and develop yourself or find yourself chasing every little new fangled thing without much success

Never worried about DEFLECTION, making O/B, and have C/B we’re I want is my goal.

Deflection is Greek to me, let not complicate thing with CF Shafts, Glover, and other BS.

Will say it again guy who won everything in most big tournaments in Arizona played with McDermott Cheap Widow, and LePro.

His skill was key to winning, no 🐂💩🐂💩🐂💩

Well said Cowboy, I'm new here so I dont want to ruffle feathers... but pool is a pretty simple game... see O/B hit O/B with C/B and pocket ball.

Well it is simple, but complicated, like Golf marketing.

COMPANIES are always trying to sell you the late accessory, or latest greatest gizmo.

We have company in Valley who is World Class Gunsmith & Tweekers.

People go to them to tweek rifles, pistols, shotguns, spending big bucks on customization.

Return for 85% of clients is bragging rights, because most can not shoot for 💩, and just blew money.

When you become maybe Short Stop Speed maybe a CF Shaft will give you edge. Most recreational player will not move up to Short Stop Speed with doo dads. Practice, and made 2,000 hours a year practicing could help.
