To the top!

Thanks md5key....I have dropped the ball in past cpl days...and for that I apologise....The wife should be mailing the tips off to each cuemaker to use on the shaft...Still looking for some people in the Texas area to host the cues...Pacific North West....needing people that can take the cues to a major pool hall for a few local players to try and out get a feel for each cue...

I have talked to the cuemakers....this is full steam ahead...

Gotta go to a meeting now....but will be back in about an hr to check back in......

Any questions post here....or feel free to send me a PM......thanks everyone who is participating

Shawn

I wonder if Cue&Cushion would be interested. They could hold a custom cue tryout thing and charge people to test hit custom cues and select one they like, and then put an order in for one.

Alot of request to be a part of this...and I am writing everyone down that wants to participate....This is gonna be fun..

Just to let everyone know....The deadline for the cues to be finished is April 17. The cues will then be shipped to Eric Crisp (Sugartree Cues) for him to do an Initial evaluation. He will mark the cues #1-7. Eric and myself know which cuemakers are involved, but he will be the only one knowing who made which cue. He will keep the cues approx 5 days for his evaluation and take them to his local pool hall for others to test hit as well. JB Cases is making a case just for this even to store and ship all the cues together, so we will all evaluate the case as well.

The cues will them come to me, I will video my initial evaluation and assessment of each cue and post it to youtube for all to see. I will also take the cues to Magoos in Tulsa for SK Custom Cues, Duane Remick and who ever else wants to evaluate them can do so as well and I will post the results on here. Then, its off on thier long voyage...the cuemakers who built the cues will get the cues as well so they can test hit the other cues...

Once the cues come back to me, I do whatever the cuemakers want me to do with the cues, either sell them, and send them the money. Or raffle the cues off and all the money goes to AZ Billiards. If all the cuemakers agree, we will try and raffle the 7 cues and case off as a package deal.

Any questions please feel free to ask or send me a message.....

Thanks guys

Shawn

Cool, glad to hear this is going off! A Big Thanks to all involved!

Way to go Shawn!

I suggest no evaluations, videos or reviews be released untill all of the testing by everyone involved is completed. That way there is no bias involved, real or percieved, by anyone reading or viewing someone elses reviews.

Yea..your right...I think that would be the best thing to do is just send me all the info and I put in into a excel spreadsheet...at the end of the buildoff, reveal all the info on here.....good idea.

That way if cue #2 has more votes...it will not sway anyone to vote for it...I gocha....

Management of the Evaluation Process

I put in awhile ago to host the cues, and I hope I'm the guy in FL who gets to participate.

I'm thinking that there might be some difficulty in managing the evaluation process if the cues are taken to a big pool hall and quite a number of people want to participate in the evaluation. Imagine with me for a minute:

I post a few messages on AZB to announce that I'll be bringing the cues to ABC Pool Hall for 4 hours on Sat and the DEF Pool Hall for 4 hours on Sunday. I write up a post or two on my blog as well and hopefully whip up extra enthusiasm.

On Saturday there's a line of people I don't know who want to check out the cues. How do I keep some semblance of order and oversight for the safety and protection of these fine cues I've been entrusted with? I don't want one to go missing. It would wreck the whole thing.

Here's my proposal. Consider it a first draft to be amended as we already did with the original build-off idea.

  1. Host should make multiple announcements on AZB two weeks before, 1 week before and then 3 days before the Evaluation Days.
  2. This announcement should include the names and locations of the pool halls where the Build-off Cues can be seen, along with the dates and times.
  3. Each participant has to pay $10 for the privilege of evaluating the cues with the money all going to the charity of the Host's choice.
  4. Alternatively, the money could go into the prize pool of a tournament at that pool hall, increasing the $added for that one time.
  5. Each participant surrenders their Driver's License when they put up their $10 and they are given a cue and a standard evaluation sheet (we standardize it before the cues go out). They get 5-6 minutes with each cue. In a 4 hour session a max of 28 evaluators can participate, figuring for the extra admin time per turnaround event added to the 5-6 min evaluation time, plus everyone probably won't turn their cue in on time.
  6. At 9 past the hour and every 8-9 minutes thereafter, the evaluators each come to the Host with their filled in sheets, and the cues. The sheets have the cue numbers marker along with the name of the evaluator and the answers to the various questions. The Host examines each cue for damage and notes any issues on the evaluation sheet. This way, we get lots of complete and standardized evaluations instead of random comments.
  7. Once all cues and evaluation sheets have been collected, Host gives each person a different cue and off they go for another 10 minutes. Rotating this seven times to give each person a look at each cue should take about 1 hour for seven people to finish with 7 cues.
  8. The money to participate isn?t a requirement but I think it would help winnow out those who are serious from those who aren?t.
OK guys, what do you think? I look forward to reading your critiques and would also like to see suggestions (I saw a couple good ones already) for what should go on the standard evaluation sheets.

I will glady help you with this evalution if you get the cues here in the Tampa Bay area. Long time player, I captain multiple pool teams, have had many cue. I believe that I am articulate and have above average sensory skills. Detailed evaluation & explaination of my opinions would be my pleasure.

Let me know

First, I have no problem with you participating and will welcome your involvement if I'm selected.

Second, I wanted to ask a question of ftgokie and everyone else as to who it is that we are looking to have evaluate the cues. Starting out in the thread I thought the purpose was to have ordinary players do the evaluating, since it was they who under normal circumstances wouldn't have an opportunity to examine 1 custom cue let alone 7. Then I saw that you, ftgokie were going to take the cues 1st thing to Buddy Hall and a couple of other high end players.

Which perspective are we looking for here? I too could take the cues to a couple high end pros who are in the area and probably would be willing to participate. Is that what we're looking to do, or do we want a bunch of average league players, or some place in between, say very good payers who know something, or think they do, about the art of cuemaking.

I know a couple of custom cuemakers in this area who are not participating but who might be willing to voice opinions on the cues. Is this a good or bad idea? What do you all think? We should have answers to these and other similar questions before the cues are sent around so that we all do the same thing so that we, and the cuemakers, get the best information out of all this (enjoyable) work.

I'd like to see a lot more feed back on my ideas for managing the evals too. Got one vote for the DL idea; how about the $10? How many minutes per cue is an appropriate amount of time? Do we want to lean toward longer evals by fewer players or the opposite? How do you all feel about the idea of standardized evaluation sheets? etc., etc.?

Lets get this discussion going, kick these ideas around, come up with others and settle on a methodology that all hosts can agree to and will follow.

Here is something you that may be fun for all of us if anyone is willing to do this.

Have 3-4 cue makers make a simple cue to the same specs, and we send them around to some members to try out and us give feedback for the rest of the members to go off of.

This may or may not be something that could be done, just trying to see if I should pursue this or not.

I would buy the cues, if you wanted to participate, then you pay for shipping from me to you, then to the next person that wants to try them out. After everyone s done, I pay for shipping back to me.

If this sounds like something that you would want to participate in, let me know.

We would also need to get 2,3 or 4 cue makers names that you think you would like to try out..

I am just seeing if this may or may not be something that we could do as a forum...

Custom Cue build off with the best of the best on the discovery channel... I'm for it;)

The next go round.....I have had 2 High End cuemakers contact me to participate in a buildoff on cues. We have thrown the idea around to build approx a 2500.00 cue....the cue builders do what they want as long as they would sell the cue for 2500.00....1 cuemaker has a HUGE wait time...the other is not taking any orders.....but.....thats down the road...but...in the works.....we will see...

This one has to go over good first..

Guys....ALOT of bad has happend here this past week and I have not been on as much as I would have liked...had a break in and alot was taken...my son, wife and I stayed in our 5th wheel out at my moms and didnt have internet access while we was there....if you have never had your home broken in to and alot of valuables stolen..you cant imagine how violated we feel....and not so safe.....luckily we were not here while this man did this. He will be caught though!!!!!!!

As far as having Buddy Hall test them out....I have not even asked him..He is a super nice guy and he may want to voice his opinion...but I cannot say that he will. I am just getting regular players in 2 local pool halls try them out is all I am doing. In my pool hall, All American Billairds, I am gonna let a few people in my pool league shoot with the cues....people that I know and trust will take care of the cues and not bang them around.

Now, nothing against anyone at Magoos in Tulsa....but there...I will probably rent 3-4 tables in the back...and ask people to try out the cues under the close supervision of myself, and SK Custom Cues "if he is willing"...I will probably ask for an id while they have a cue...I am not sure about saying it will cost you 10.00 to test the cues out....undecided as of now.....

Now...if I can get the cues back in time for the World Classic....I will probably go down there....but will charge people 10.00 to test out the cues...and I will take my laptop with the excel spreadsheet a fellow AZer is coming up with...and let them enter their results...and at the end of it all, post the results...

Getting late and have a long day ahead....

Shawn sorry to hear about your break in. This was probably local but I think it serves as a reminder to all of us to be careful about sharing who we are, where we are and what we have so casually on the net.

I wouldn't doubt that as times get tougher crimes like this will go up.

I hate to hear stories like this and am glad to hear your family is safe.

Our thoughts go out to you, ftgokie. Take all the time you need to get your situation together and forget about posting for awhile. Just spend some extra time with your family, everyone could probably use the comfort.

Yea...he is local alright......Its my cousin. He has a bad drug problem...he came over to my house to borrow some money for food for him and his family.....he asked for 200.00. I told him I would be happy to help out, but that I was not going to give him 200.00. I told him if they were hungry, that I would take them all out to eat at a restaurant....then after, me my wife and son would take him, his wife, and 2 daughters to Wal Mart and they could get up to 500.00 worth of groceries..he declined :frown:

SO that told me all he wanted was drug money and not food for his family....I guess he was pissed...so he just decided to help himself....I just hate he is in this position now...now when he is caught his children will suffer from a terrible decision he made in order to satisfy his drug habit. I have offered to pay for him to go to rehab...he spent 4 days at a facility (2500) out of my pocket...then he left.

It just sucks that this happend. I can replace the cpl of cues he took, the cash he took, the window he broke...mine and my wifes jewelry.....but I cannot replace my daughters necklace she made for my wife before she passed away 2 yrs ago. That is really the only thing that I would give anything to get back.

Sounds like your cousin needs a good straightening out. Sorry to hear about the situation. At least no-one was hurt.

Take care now. Best wishes to your family.
