cuemakers or not

.

Kersenbach cues hit awesome I have heard, I have never actually hit with one but I believe that it was Jerry Franklin and Kersenbach that both came up with the Southwest design of cue building that is so successful today for that company.

As for Siegel cues. He has two lines of cues. He has a production based line of cues that his name is stamped onto that are low priced (viking or meucii ranged pricing). Then he has his custom made cues that are quite expensive and according to him he makes them himself. His custom made cues start at over $1000 or so last time I saw them.

Blud's questions work fairly well for the person that does not know what cue makers are out there, their reputations, and what to look for. Beavis also had some good points such as (are the pros that endorse the cue maker given free product or payed?)

You will have great cue makers out there though that are as of yet only known locally. We have one cue maker here in Calgary that is making unreal hitting and looking cues yet he is unknown to a large extent outside of Western Canada (where 80% of the top players are using his cues). Eventually his cues will be relized outside of this area due to the fact that he has many touring players taking his cues on the road now to tournaments in the States.

The cue maker I speak of has far more respect for his cues locally then another cue maker here in Calgary. The other cue maker has been making cues longer, he has been trained by a well known cue maker in the States, he has given many of his cues to pro players from the states for endorsements, and passes almost every other question with flying colors. Yet he does not make a cue that plays anywhere near as well as the self taught, first cue maker I mentioned. The one main thing I believe you should look for when buying a cue from a custom cue maker is "What are the top players in the area of that cuemaker playing with?" When I say top players I mean the pro and semi-pro level players. Here in Calgary the best players are playing exclusively with a certain cue makers cues and that speaks volumes.

Possibly so, but Siegel and Nick Varner both have cues on the market currently. I highly doubt that either one of them are making the cues themselves, but more like just putting their name/logo on them.

I thought about it, I hate commenting when Im not sure. But I am almost positive siegel did learn how to build them from a unnamed cuemaker (dont want to start anything). This cuemaker encouraged him to start building his own cues. I think he later started paying people to build them and all he did was check quality and sign them. I have sense heard he is calling it quits as far as his cues. I heard that a reliable source, but you never know.

I talked to Mike Siegel about a month ago. I asked him if he would ever start playing again. He said quite firmly that he retired from playing professional pool and now makes cues for a living. I think he is still in the cue business for a while yet. Coolest thing about the whole meeting is he saw my cue from 10 feet away and came running up to take a look at it since he thought it was cool =)

Anybody else notice that sigel wasn't list as a GOOD TV comentator..........He gets my vote for WORST! I just never liked his attitude and really disliked his comentary. And I don't believe he MAKES cues either.......Just his name on them.

Mike Siegel

Cardinal has a great point. Mike Siegel played as good as anyone ever. But does he make his own cues? They cost enough that we the consumer should know. Do you know Blud?

DPK or David Paul Kersenbrock is a legend in cuemaking. He is in Chicago now sharing a shop with Ed Young. At present, he only makes 12 cues/year and have just started using ivory extensively. The starting price for his Custom-made cues at present is US$15,000.00

Are you referring to Kersenbach? His cues are great! I don't own one, but have shot with one before...EXCELLENT! They can be a little pricey though!

Blud, how can you forget this?
A hack who buys pre-made blanks from Prather then assembles them and puts his signature on the final product is not cuemaking?
I know of one local "cuemaker" who's been doing this for years. And he's sold cues for thousands of dollars.
These days, he's barely staying afloat.

I highly doubt it.

Joseph cues, I don't re-call who is doing that. Please let me know @ my e-mail site,[bludworth@direcway.com], thanks...

ABOUT MIKE,

To one and all, Mike Sigel builds his own cues. I set his shop up for him 9 or 10 years ago. He is still buying new equipment from me from time to time. He also has his import cues that he sells from his very nice billiard supply house in Orlando. He sells tables, cues and all related billiard supplies.

Email me at Lyonspride@shaw.ca for the cue maker and his contact info. Blud started this thread keeping names of the cue makers (either good or bad) off the thread which I think was wise.

Blud, I'd rather not name this "cuemaker".
Even privately. He is a SoCal based cueamaker and you probably would notice how familiar his cues look like when you see his "work". That is if he's still in business.
There are a few good cuemakers based in SoCal of course. Besides Tad and Gina; Zylr, Ned Morris and Ed Prewitt put out very good cues. All three are enjoying good success here.
Prewitt has stopped taking orders as Lucky buys all his cues now.
